Hungary conducted a large-scale defense exercise titled **”Adaptive Hussars 2025″** to test the country’s defense capabilities and inter-agency cooperation. Allied forces from Turkey also participated in the Distinguished Observers’ Day held on October 2 at the Martfű–Vezseny crossing over the Tisza River.
Preparation and Modernization Process
Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasized in his speech at the ceremony that the country’s security is ensured “in a prepared and prudent manner.” The minister noted that the exercise is part of Hungary’s ongoing force development and transformation process.
He explained that, recognizing in the early 2010s that a more dangerous period was approaching, Hungary felt the need to transform the Hungarian Defense Forces (HDF) into a more combat-ready, prepared, and effective organization. The Minister noted that the timely initiation of modern weapons procurement is now yielding results, adding that this applies not only to equipment but also to:
- maintenance processes and tactical procedures
- Doctrinal training and the qualified development of personnel
- Proper personnel recruitment to ensure the effectiveness of the “most critical component” —the human element
he emphasized that these elements are also of vital importance.
Comprehensive Cooperation Within the NATO Framework
The exercise was critical not only for demonstrating the military’s operational capabilities but also for showcasing the interoperability of government agencies, including disaster management personnel and law enforcement. During the exercise, H145 and H225 helicopters, Gripen fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, anti-UAV systems, and military medical units successfully carried out their missions.
Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky reiterated that NATO is the ultimate security guarantee for Hungary, noting that the exercise was conducted entirely within the NATO framework, that the command language was English, and that “Turkish allies” also participated in the activity. The minister concluded his remarks with the words, “Peace requires strength.”
Hungarian Chief of the General Staff General Dr. Gábor Böröndi, meanwhile, said that the purpose of the exercises was not merely a demonstration, but to analyze the information gained and incorporate it back into training processes. Böröndi emphasized the importance of cooperation with local authorities and NATO allies.
