South Korean defense giant Hanwha Aerospace announced that it has successfully completed the KVLS-II (Korean Vertical Launch System II) development project, marking a significant advance in naval warfare technology. This five-year project was carried out with the support of the South Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and is considered a critical milestone in the country’s defense innovation.

KVLS-II: Flexibility and Enhanced Performance

The new-generation KVLS-II system developed by Hanwha Aerospace provides naval platforms with a significant operational advantage by enabling the flexible and independent launch of multiple types of guided munitions from a single system. Vertical launch systems are recognized as among the most advanced naval technologies, requiring the highly complex integration of propulsion, fire control, and safety systems.

Key Improvements Over the Current System

According to information provided by KBS, the KVLS-II was designed to be larger than the current KVLS system. This increased size was necessary to successfully manage the high temperatures and pressures generated by the launch of more powerful missiles. The most significant innovations in the system are as follows:

  1. Standardized Munition Interface: Thanks to the standardized design of the guided munition interface, the new system allows multiple missiles to be operated from a single cell. This feature enables the flexible configuration of anti-ship missiles depending on the operational situation.
  2. Redundant Design: The KVLS-II features a redundant design. As a result, even if a malfunction occurs in one launch cell, the other cells maintain their functionality, ensuring continued stable operation.

Project Cost and Institutional Collaboration

DAPA invested approximately 71 billion won (approximately 51 million U.S. dollars) in this system development project, which began in late 2020 and lasted five years. The South Korean Agency for Defense Development (ADD)’s provision of technical support and the Navy’s contribution of operational experience with the KVLS were instrumental in the project’s successful completion. It was reported that, thanks to this collaboration, the project’s objectives were achieved without extending the development timeline or increasing costs.

The KVLS-II is planned to be integrated into the South Korean Navy’s Aegis destroyers and future warships. This integration will significantly enhance the Navy’s maritime capabilities.
