The U.S. Department of State has approved a critical military sale. Through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) channel, the potential sale of 48 M142 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) units and related support equipment to Australia, with an estimated cost of $705 million, has been approved. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) officially notified Congress of this large-scale sale on September 30, 2025, moving the process forward. Once this sale is finalized, Australia will acquire a significant modern artillery system that will contribute to regional security.

Scope and Cost of the Sale

The package, estimated at $705 million as reported by the DSCA, includes not only the artillery systems but also numerous components necessary for operational readiness. Under this scope, the following items are planned to be supplied to Australia:

  • 48 M142 HIMARS artillery systems.
  • M1084A2 HIMARS resupply vehicles and M1095 trailers.
  • Low-Cost Reduced-Range Training Rocket (LCRRPR) pods for training purposes.
  • Training, documentation, support, and test equipment.
  • U.S. government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistical support services.

Following this approval, Australia will be authorized to sign final contracts with companies such as Lockheed Martin —the system’s manufacturer—as well as L3Harris Corporation, Leonardo DRS, and Oshkosh Corporation.

Emphasis on Security and Cooperation: U.S. National Interests

In a statement issued by the DSCA, it was clearly stated that this sale will support the national security objectives of Australia, one of the U.S.’s most important allies in the Western Pacific. The text of the sales approval included the following statement: “Helping this ally develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability is vital to U.S. national interests.”

It was also emphasized that this proposed sale will enhance Australia’s ability to address current and future threats and improve its interoperability with U.S. and other allied forces. This strategic step aims to strengthen the collective defense architecture in the region.

Tactical Capabilities of the M142 HIMARS

HIMARS is a globally proven, highly mobile artillery system. Integrated onto a 6×6 FMTV truck chassis, this system stands out for its high maneuverability and compact design.

  • Weapons and Ammunition: HIMARS can be equipped with 6 MLRS-series rockets or 1 ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile Systems) tactical missile. The system is protected by Dragon armor against small-caliber rounds and shrapnel fragments.
  • Range Variability: The firing range varies significantly depending on the munitions used:
    • 45 km with theER-MLRS rocket,
    • up to 70 km with aguided GMLRS rocket,
    • and up to 300 km with theATACMS tactical missile.
  • Global Deployment: Thanks to its compact and highly effective design, the HIMARS is in service with many countries, including Australia, Canada, Poland, Ukraine, and the United States.
