Transport officials in Brussels announced that all metro and train services in the city have been stopped.
Maelbeek is known as a neighborhood in Brussels where citizens of Arab origin live.
Salah Abdeslam, who carried out the Paris attacks that occurred on 13 November 2015 and resulted in the death of 130 people, was arrested in Brussels last Friday.
It is suspected that airport and metro station explosions in Brussels could be revenge attacks by terrorists in response to Abdeslam's capture.
After the explosions, terror alarms were raised to the highest level in the country.
Following the explosions, the first statement came from Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel.
Saying that there are many dead and injured in the explosions in Brussels, Prime Minister Michel said, “It is a dark day for Belgium. It is a blind and cowardly attack. ” Michel also stated that additional soldiers were sent to Brussels.
Meanwhile, Michel called for a national security meeting. The relevant ministers in the government are attending the national security meeting.
