Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and U.S.-based L3Harris Technologies have signed a strategic partnership to develop a light attack and reconnaissance aircraft called “Blue Sky Warden” tailored to Israel’s specific defense needs. The signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlines plans for the joint development and technology integration of a version of L3Harris’s successful Sky Warden platform optimized for Israel’s operational environment.

Announced on October 15, 2025, this new strategic partnership brings together defense industry giants from both countries. Blue Sky Warden, which will be developed based on L3Harris’s reliable Sky Warden platform, aims to provide tailored solutions to address the evolving threat perceptions of the Israeli Ministry of Defense and Air Force.

Advanced ISR and Precision Strike Capabilities

Blue Sky Warden will be built upon the OA-1K Skyraider II design used by the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The new aircraft is expected to combine precision strike capabilities with advanced ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) systems optimized for Israel’s operational environment. This will integrate both reconnaissance and strike capabilities into a single platform for air operations.

IAI will play a key role in the project’s technology integration. An IAI open-architecture mission computer, housing Israel-specific software and specialized capabilities, will be integrated into the aircraft. IAI will also manage the procurement and integration of mission equipment and, together with the Ministry of Defense and the Israeli Air Force, will lead flight tests and airworthiness activities.

Leaders Emphasize Partnership

IAI CEO Boaz Levy highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “By combining IAI’s state-of-the-art systems and expertise in mission system integration with L3Harris’ Sky Warden platform, we are delivering a tailored solution that meets the evolving needs of the Israeli Ministry of Defense and Air Force,” he said.

Jon Rambeau, President of L3Harris Integrated Mission Systems, added, “This strategic partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries enables us to offer a specialized version of our Sky Warden to meet Israel’s operational and industrial needs. “The Sky Warden light attack aircraft offers best-in-class durability, payload capacity, and survivability required for aerial intelligence, reconnaissance, and other missions,” he said. This collaboration is viewed as a significant step in terms of regional security balances.
