Germany and the Netherlands have signed a new multibillion-dollar agreement to strengthen European defense cooperation. Both countries will add the new-generation Jackal (Schakal) wheeled infantry fighting vehicles—developed by the joint manufacturer Rheinmetall—to their arsenals. The contract, with a total value of approximately 3.4 billion euros (4 billion dollars), aims to enhance the ability of the neighboring countries’ forces to operate jointly.
Under the project led by the European Defense Procurement Organization (OCCAR), 150 Jackal combat vehicles will be delivered to the German Bundeswehr and 72 to the Dutch armed forces. In a statement issued on Monday, Rheinmetall announced that its share of the contract amounts to approximately 3 billion euros (excluding VAT). The company is collaborating with KNDS Germany and Artec under a joint venture on matters related to the Boxer.
Power Built on the Boxer Chassis
The Jackal armored vehicle was developed based on the Boxer wheeled chassis, which is known for its modular design and has a proven track record. The new vehicle is designed to carry the turret and powerful 30 mm main gun of the Puma, a heavier tracked armored vehicle. This feature provides the Jackal with high firepower combined with excellent mobility.
Germany and the Netherlands have long maintained regular cooperation regarding arms procurement and the joint command of certain segments of their forces. This new procurement demonstrates the two countries’ commitment to further integrating their defense strategies.
It was reported that the total investment in the Boxer program, managed by OCCAR, has reached 10 billion euros with the addition of this latest version. In addition to the Jackal project, other developments based on the Boxer chassis include critical capabilities such as combat ambulances, a bridge-laying variant, and a howitzer variant utilizing the German Panzerhaubitze 2000. This versatile chassis enables European armies to quickly adapt to changing defense needs.
