Transforming Northern Rail: A Major Fleet Upgrade Begins

Northern Rail is undertaking a significant fleet enhancement with the addition of 37 meticulously refurbished four-car Class 350 trains. This strategic upgrade aims to increase service reliability, increase passenger comfort, and shorten travel times across North West England. The project, with an approximate investment of £25 million, is set to revolutionize the region’s rail experience starting from early 2028.

State-of-the-Art Refurbishments to Elevate Passenger Experience

From October 2027 through February 2029, Siemens Mobility will oversee a comprehensive interior and exterior overhaul of these trains at Northampton’s dedicated modification centers. The refurbishments include the installation of modern climate control systems, expanded luggage spaces, and enhanced seating arrangements. Notably, these trains will house multiple electric power outlets at each seat, marking a first for Northern’s fleet, fostering a more productive and comfortable journey for travelers.

To ensure operational efficiency in adverse weather conditions, the trains will be equipped with advanced Variable Rate Smoothing (VRS) systems. These systems reduce the effects of rail surface irregularities, leading to a decrease in stopping distances by up to 50% and minimizing service disruptions during autumn and winter months. This technological upgrade will position Northern to maintain punctuality and service quality despite challenging weather patterns.

Replacing Aging Fleet and Supporting Sustainable Growth

The refurbished Class 350 units are designed to replace the existing Class 323 electric trains, most of which are nearly two decades old and nearing the end of their operational life. The transition is part of Northern’s broader commitment to modernize its entire fleet. The initial five trains are expected to enter service by early 2028, with the remaining units gradually joining the network over the next two years.

This fleet update is part of Northern’s ambitious plan to expand its operational capacity, aiming to add up to 450 new trains in the coming years. By replacing aging infrastructure with modern, energy-efficient trains, Northern not only seeks to enhance capacity but also to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with national sustainability goals.

In addition, the refurbishment and new acquisitions will align with the Great British Railways branding initiative, ensuring a cohesive and recognizable journey experience for passengers across different regions.

Key Timelines and Strategic Outcomes

  • October 2027: Start of refurbishment works at Northampton facility.
  • Early 2028: First refurbished Class 350 trains begin passenger service.
  • 2028-2030: Complete fleet transition with remaining trains introduced gradually.
  • Post-2030: Continued fleet expansion with up to 450 new trains planned, securing Northern’s future as a modern, efficient service provider.

By swiftly renewing its fleet with modern, technologically advanced trains, Northern Rail promises a more reliable, comfortable, and sustainable transportation option This strategic move ensures consistent service quality while supporting regional growth and environmental targets.
