The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officially announced that a unit of its JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets has arrived in Azerbaijan to participate in the “Indus Shield Alpha” bilateral air combat exercise. This development comes on the heels of claims on social media that JF-17 fighter jets had been delivered to Azerbaijan. The defense agreements already signed between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, along with Azerbaijan’s anticipated procurement of JF-17 fighter jets, make this exercise even more significant.
Demonstration of Non-Stop Flight and Air-to-Air Refueling Capabilities
The Pakistan Air Force announced that its units conducted a non-stop flight to Azerbaijan and carried out a flawless in-flight refueling operation during the mission. This complex operation, carried out by the PAF’s IL-78 aerial refueling aircraft, once again confirmed the long-range operational capabilities of the JF-17 fighter jets.
The statement emphasized that this operation was “an extraordinary display of operational skill and endurance.”
Purpose and Scope of the Exercise
The “Indus Shield Alpha” exercise aims to enhance mutual understanding, tactical coordination, and interoperability between the two sister air forces. The exercise’s focal points are as follows:

Azerbaijan’s JF-17 Procurement Process
Pakistan’s announcement coincided with expectations that Azerbaijan will soon take delivery of JF-17 Block III fighter jets. It had previously been reported that an agreement had been signed between Azerbaijan and Pakistan for the procurement of 40 fighter jets, involving an investment of $2 billion. It was known that at the end of 2024, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev personally inspected the JF-17 Block III aircraft and announced that deliveries would take place soon.
