India has taken a critical step toward strengthening its defense capabilities by signing a massive deal with the United Kingdom worth approximately $468 million (350 million pounds). The deal covers the procurement of LMM (Lightweight Multirole Missiles) produced by Thales in the United Kingdom. Announced on Thursday, October 9, this contract is seen as a significant indicator of the deepening strategic and defense cooperation between the two countries.
Signing Ceremony Held During Summit Meeting
The announcement of the agreement was made during a meeting between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai. This meeting followed the trade agreement signed between the two countries a few months ago, and the leaders emphasized the growing potential in the economic and defense sectors.
The procurement of these missiles is of great importance to the United Kingdom, both economically and in terms of employment. The missiles will be manufactured at the Thales facility in Northern Ireland. According to the government’s statement, this facility—which is currently producing the same missile system for Ukraine—will preserve 700 jobs thanks to the agreement with India.
The UK government also stated that this agreement “paves the way for a broader, comprehensive defense cooperation between the UK and India, for which negotiations are currently underway.” This signals that partnership in future defense projects will increase even further.
The UK’s Defense Industry-Focused Growth Strategy
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that over the past 12 months, they have focused on making the defense industry a driving force for economic growth and have pledged to support export-led growth. As part of this strategy, the United Kingdom aims to increase defense spending in line with NATO targets.
In this context, according to a Reuters report, the country recently signed a $13.5 billion frigate export deal with Norway as well. This new missile agreement with India further solidifies the UK’s success in defense exports.
In addition to the missile deal, the United Kingdom announced that it has entered a new phase of cooperation with India on the development of electric propulsion systems for the navy. With the signing of this new phase of the contract—valued at 250 million pounds in the first stage—the process of joint technology development for naval platforms has been deepened.
