Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer gave advice on diabetes and diabetes prevention.

Internal Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer said that diabetes, which is at the forefront of the diseases of the age and is called "diabetes" among the people, is a type of disease that plays the first role in the formation of many deadly diseases and is very common all over the world.

Stating that the cause of diabetes is insufficient or no insulin hormone production for any reason, or that body tissues become insensitive to insulin, Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer said, “Living a sedentary life is one of the most common mistakes that diabetes patients make. Movement and exercise have an important place in blood sugar and weight control. Since doing the exercise on an empty stomach can lead to low blood sugar, it is necessary to start the exercise one hour after the main meal or half an hour after the snack.

Stating that diabetes patients leave treatment without a doctor's advice, skip or change meals, or delay doctor's control are among the common mistakes. Dr. Aytaç Atamer warned, "Using drugs recommended to others is one of the most common mistakes."

Emphasizing that blood sugar should be at a certain level, Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer said, “Almost the only fuel for our brain is glucose found in food and beverages. For this reason, our blood sugar must be at a certain level, especially in order for our brain to function properly.

Low blood sugar can be mild, moderate or severe. Sweating occurs in mildly low blood sugar. There may also be irritability, tremor, weakness, extreme hunger, dizziness, palpitations. Moderate low blood sugar can cause slightly more serious conditions. Personality changes such as inability to concentrate on events, confusion, irritability, crying, and irritability may occur. If blood sugar drops too low, unconsciousness, stroke, seizure and, in the worst case, death can be encountered. Low blood sugar can lead to a more dangerous situation than high blood sugar. "Severe low blood sugar is an emergency and should be treated quickly," he said.

Touching on the issues that diabetes patients should pay attention to, Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer concluded his words as follows:

“Diabetic patients should pay attention to their diet first. He should not be hungry for a long time, should not eat too much food at once. Both insulin and oral sugar-reducing drugs should be used properly and correctly, exercise should not be neglected and regular walks should be done. Attention should be paid to the care of the feet, orthopic soles and non-squeezing shoes and socks should be worn, the care and cleaning of the feet should not be neglected. The most valuable favor that diabetics can do for themselves is not to smoke, to quit smoking if they are, and to stay away from alcohol.”
