The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry continues its efforts to prevent damages in the settlements and agricultural lands at risk of flooding in our country. In this context, in the project, where preliminary investigation and planning studies were started in 2021, flood traps project and construction works continue. In 2022, work on the construction of a flood rake started in order to keep the floating woody materials in the upper elevations of the rivers.

The Flood Forecasting and Early Warning Center (TATUM), whose work is being carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Water Management, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works and General Directorate of Meteorology, has been operating since December 2017. In this context, TATUS was started in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2023.

The aim of the study is to provide information about the time, location, effects and precautions to be taken of the possible flood up to 15 hours before using hydrological and hydraulic models to be created in 72 pilot sub-basins selected from the Eastern Black Sea, Western Black Sea, Antalya and Eastern Mediterranean basins. In addition, the Project for Dissemination of Flood Forecasting and Early Warning System in 6 basins is planned to start in 2023.

Flood Management Plans are Prepared at Basin Scale

In order to reduce and manage the flood risk in the country, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry prepares flood management plans at the basin scale. With the flood management plans, flood hazard maps and risk maps are prepared on a basin basis, and it is ensured that the intervention and improvement works to be carried out before, during and after the flood are planned and directed.

Thus, it is aimed to make all kinds of investments made in the country healthier and more efficient, to minimize the economic loss, to increase the confidence of the citizens, and to reduce the loss of life as a result of increasing the awareness of the citizens and local governments about the flood.

In this context, as of the end of the year, in 23 basins (Yeşilırmak, Antalya, Sakarya, Susurluk, Ceyhan, Aras, Kızılırmak, Northern Aegean, Küçük Menderes, Gediz, Büyük Menderes, Akarçay, Western Mediterranean, Burdur, Eastern Mediterranean, Western Black Sea, Fırat-Dicle, Eastern Black Sea, Çoruh, Asi, Seyhan, Van Lake and Konya basins) flood management plan has been completed, work continues in 2 basins (Marmara and Meriç-Ergene).

On the other hand, the Project for Updating the Flood Management Plans in 5 basins (Ceyhan, Susurluk, Sakarya, Yeşilırmak and Antalya) was initiated. Work continues on the projects.
