Speaking at the meeting where the joint struggle decision was made, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer“We will win in Buca, just as we won in the fight against the poisonous Sao Paulo ship. We want to make İzmir a part of this just struggle.”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer He participated in the meeting held to bring the land belonging to the destroyed Buca Prison to the city as a green area. Chairman of the meeting held in the activity hall of Buca Municipality Semi-Olympic Swimming Pool. Tunç SoyerIn addition to Buca Mayor Erhan Kılıç, İzmir Bar Association President Sefa Yılmaz, TMMOB İzmir Provincial Coordination Board Secretary Aykut Aydemir, DİSK Aegean Region Representative Memiş Sarı, KESK İzmir Term Sözcüsü Mustafa Güven, İzmir Chamber of Medicine Board Member Yüce Ayhan, Chamber of City Planners İzmir Branch Executive Board Secretary Zafer Mutluer, Chamber of Landscape Architects İzmir Branch President Elvin Sönmez Güler, Buca Prison Liberating Platform Representative Savaş Candemir, representatives of unions, chambers and non-governmental organizations, council members, political party representatives, council members, muhtars and many components attended.

“A picture that no Izmir citizen or conscience can accept”

At the meeting, the President reiterated his message of determination not to leave the Buca Prison area to concrete. Tunç Soyer“A very important decision has been made regarding the area that emerged after the demolition of Buca Prison. A plan was prepared to pave the way for construction in this area. This plan means more concrete production than the demolished structure for anyone who knows the texture of Buca. While there is a possibility that Buca could be a breathing space in such a cramped building, it is abandoned. Commerce and housing functions are loaded and the possibility of this place being a recreation area is eliminated. This is a picture that no Izmir citizen or conscience can accept.”

President Soyer: “We will not allow it”

President Soyer said, “Comparing the previous plan and the plans made by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, it can be seen that; The commercial and residential area, which was 40 thousand square meters in the first plan, increased to 70 thousand square meters. The park area has decreased from 20 thousand square meters to 11 thousand square meters. We will determine our next roadmap. Just as we achieved a great victory by making a common voice about the arrival of the poison-laden Sao Paulo ship in Izmir in Aliağa, we came together this time not to allow Buca to be massacred so publicly. We want to magnify this gathering. Because we think that the majority who remain silent are not aware of this picture. Our duty is to announce to the whole of Izmir what a just demand we have. We want to be able to make all of Izmir a part of this just struggle. That's what we're here for."

“He finds the right way eventually”

Describing the process of the abolition of Buca Prison, Buca Mayor Erhan Kılıç said, “Buca Prison is at the heart of Buca. Maybe it was outside the city in the part where it was built, but over time, it became an area in the center of Buca due to unplanned urbanization. Perhaps our biggest struggle since the day I took office was the abolition of the prison. During the election process, this became the subject of polemics. At that time, I said that we should solve this problem together. But for this, Buca Metro is the biggest investment in the history of Izmir, while this work was going on, there would be disruptions in traffic. With the abolition of the prison, we wanted the Adnan Kahveci Street above to be opened to traffic. This would be a parallel road to Menderes Street. Finally, the prison is over. But there is a plan work on it. We said that if this place becomes a shopping mall, the traffic of Buca would be killed, and we said this everywhere. It has now been turned into a better way. TRUE; finds its way eventually. "I believe this will be a green space," he said.

“As of today, the litigation process has started”

Aykut Akdemir, Secretary of TMMOB İzmir Provincial Coordination Board, who gave information about the judicial process, said, “Yesterday, we submitted our objection petition to the İzmir Provincial Directorate against the plan of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. As of today, the litigation process has started,” he said.

Legal grounds exist

Zafer Mutluer, Secretary of the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of City Planners, said: “One of our most important legal bases is this: We have an expert report in our case regarding the 2011/1 scale master development plan approved in 5000. The report says that since the prison area is the central area, the trade function of 37 thousand square meters determined in this area cannot be met with the existing transportation axes. Today, it is planned to build a commercial area of 500 thousand square meters with a residential area of 12 people. Buca is a city drowned in concrete. When such opportunities come our way, we must use these spaces for the public good. For years, instead of giving public areas to the relevant municipalities, trade rents have been increased and sold. Buca desperately needs green and public space. It is debatable what will happen, but it is not possible for a new population to come there,” he said.

Participants in the meeting also made suggestions for the campaign to be carried out. At the end of the meeting, it was decided that DİSK, KESK, İzmir Bar Association, TMMOB and the Chamber of Physicians would form the Executive Board, and an executive committee would be formed from the headmen and the representatives of the associations and platforms fighting for the same purpose. The Executive Board will announce the action plan by issuing a declaration on this subject in a short time.
