Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Psychiatry Specialist Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Erkmen made evaluations about the psychology of individuals who were exposed to an unusual situation such as terrorism and made recommendations.

Expressing that people who are exposed to terrorist incidents experience a moment of horror that a normal person should not experience, even if there is no physical injury, Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Erkmen said, “When they repeat the event in their minds both at the moment and later on, a condition called Acute Stress Disorder occurs. This manifests itself with fear, distress, tension, constant thinking about the moment and sleep disturbance. If their relatives lost their lives or were injured, it is normal to participate in this situation in mourning. Being in mourning makes the picture even worse,” he said.

Stating that acute stress disorder can disappear over time without much intervention for many people, Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Erkmen said, “However, if this situation continues, the disease called 'Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder' will occur. Here, there may be constant tension, restlessness, crying, not being able to enjoy life and remembering the event for various reasons, and sometimes even visualizing it. In such a case, it is necessary to apply psychiatric treatment," he said.

Emphasizing that if there are people who have been exposed to such situations in the society before, they are most affected by Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Erkmen concluded his words as follows:

“There is a general tension and fear in society. Especially if it happens again, there is a fear. The purpose of terrorism is to spread this fear. In order to overcome this fear, we need to continue our normal life. The best thing to do is to identify those who are in a difficult situation by screening those who are there. However, this is difficult to implement because it requires a very comprehensive organization. Creating and announcing places for those who do not feel well can be the simplest method.”
