According to initial reports, at least 50 people were killed in the accident that occurred in the morning when the train derailed in the Tanganyika region in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Reuters quoted Humanitarian Affairs Minister Steve Mbikayi as saying that the accident occurred in the town of Mayibaridi at three in the morning. Mbikayi said that at least 50 people were killed in the accident, 23 people were injured and taken to hospital.
