Vietnam Invests Heavily in Modernizing Its Rail Infrastructure

Vietnam is making strategic investments in its railway network to significantly improve connectivity across the country. The government has proposed seven new railway lines in Ho Chi Minh City, aiming to develop an extensive eight-line system that will boost regional integration and economic development. These lines, expected to possess standard gauge tracks of 1435 millimeters, will connect major urban centers with suburban and rural areas, dramatically reducing travel times and increasing freight efficiency.

Key Projects Reshape Urban Transit Systems and Regional Links

Hanoi’s ambitious plan to develop five urban metro lines illustrates Vietnam’s focus on sustainable city transport. These projects are ongoing with contracts in the final negotiation stages, targeting completion by 2030. Simultaneously, projects like the light rail from Phu Quoc Airport to APEC 2027 Congress Center facilitate tourism and local commerce, with private stakeholders such as Sun Group leading the charge under build-operate-transfer agreements. In Da Nang, a railway connecting Kim Lien Station with the Lien Chieu port zone is slated for construction between 2026-2030, enhancing freight and passenger movement. The city also plans to launch a metro line by early 2027 to serve Hoi An, Tam Ky, and Chu Lai, cementing Da Nang’s role as a regional logistical hub.

High-Speed Rail Project, a National Priority with $67 Billion Budget

The cornerstone of Vietnam’s rail ambitions lies in a high-speed line connecting the north and south. Budgeted at over $67 billion, the project aims to revolutionize intercity travel, cut journey times drastically, and promote economic synergy across regions. Construction is projected to commence by late 2027, with targeted completion in phases, demonstrating Vietnam’s commitment to establishing a world-class high-speed rail network.

Building a Self-Reliant Railway Industry through Strategic Initiatives

Vietnam is establishing a comprehensive Railway Industry Complex, designed to facilitate local manufacturing, maintenance, and technical training. This hub will encompass over 25 functional zones focused on locomotive, carriage, and track component production, aiming for high domestic content and technological innovation. By fostering a self-sufficient industry, Vietnam reduces dependency on foreign suppliers, creates thousands of jobs, and enhances national security in transportation infrastructure.

Partnerships with global leaders like Siemens and Hyundai Rotem accelerate technology transfer and capacity building. Local firms like Hoa Phat and THACO expand their roles by manufacturing tracks, locomotives, and rolling stock components, aligning with the long-term goal of making Vietnam a leading train manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia.

Projected to surpass 2.3 quadrillion dong by 2050, Vietnam’s rail sector aims to become a major economic driver. These investments will stimulate related industries such as steel, engineering, and services, creating a robust ecosystem poised for innovation and sustainability.

Focus on technology transfer, internal talent development, and continuous industry collaboration is crucial for Vietnam’s ongoing success. Building local expertise ensures the industry’s resilience and alignments with government policies to boost domestic capabilities and international competitiveness.
