Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Speech and Language Therapist Lect. See. Ayşe Buse Saraç talked about the factors that cause articulation disorders and the problems they cause in the life of the individual and made important recommendations so that they do not adversely affect the future life.

Speech and Language Therapist Ayşe Buse Saraç, who stated that articulation disorder is characterized by the difficulty of producing speech sounds, continued as follows:

“Because of the disorder, the individual produces the speech sounds of his native language incompletely or incorrectly. Articulation disorder may occur due to structural anomaly (cleft lip or palate), neurological/developmental disorders, hearing loss and other causes. It can also be seen without any reason. In this direction, different error types can be seen such as 'tap' instead of 'door' or 'freezing' instead of freezing. Such errors can interfere with speech understanding by the audience. For this reason, it is necessary for the parents to notice the missing or faulty productions during speech in early childhood and to apply to a speech and language therapist without wasting time.”

Emphasizing that articulation disorders do not resolve spontaneously, Speech and Language Therapist Ayşe Buse Saraç said, “In this context, early intervention in articulation disorders is critical. For the sounds produced incorrectly or incompletely, a speech and language therapist should be consulted without wasting time. Otherwise, we can say that it takes more time to bring the speech sounds produced incorrectly or incompletely for a long time closer to the target sound production. Initiatives for articulation problems, especially in early childhood, help to achieve more successful results when carried out with parental support.

Saraç stated that as a result of informal and formal evaluations made by speech and language therapists, it was determined whether the inadequacy of the individual's speech sounds is characterized by articulation disorder and continued his words as follows:

“Then, the sounds produced by the individual with articulation disorder are determined, and the therapy program is created individually according to the needs of the individual. In this context, it is ensured that the pronunciation behavior of the target sound is noticed and the old pronunciation behavior is changed. Results in parallel with the successful production of the target sound sözcük, sözcüIt is produced in phrase and sentence, generalized to daily conversation with activities and homework. Parents play an important role in the ongoing work of children outside of the clinical setting.”

Stating that children typically acquire speech sounds in a developmental order, Speech and Language Therapist Ayşe Buse Saraç said, “Research emphasizes that children between the ages of 4 and 4,5 should produce the sounds within the scope of their mother tongue correctly and that their speech should be understood by people other than their parents. Articulation problems that are ignored from the specified age range may continue until adulthood. This situation can disrupt the professional, social and academic life of the individual.
