School phobia can be seen in all children, especially in boys, who have just started kindergarten, kindergarten and primary school. Specialist Psychologist Merve Uyar, doctor of Kızılay Kağıthane Hospital, warned parents against this fear experienced in children and stated that children's reactions should be approached with care and compassion. Uyar said that the reactions given to children can have a positive or negative effect on their personalities.

“Children may react differently to School Fear”

Stating that parents should be sensitive about this issue, Kızılay Kağıthane Hospital doctor Specialist Psychologist Merve Uyar said, “School is an important socialization tool, but also an environment where the child develops cognitively, spiritually and emotionally. In addition, starting primary school is the period of separation from parents and individualization. He has to deal with many situations when he is alone. When children are afraid of going to school, barely persuaded to go to school/not wanting to go to school at all, the underlying reasons may vary. Often fear of school, social phobia, peer bullying. It can be caused by situations such as separation anxiety from parents. In the face of this situation, children may show biological effects that affect their anxiety levels. These reactions are typical when they experience anxiety. This reaction includes different physiological responses with elevated adrenaline level. These can be listed as increased heart rate, abdominal pain, sweating, tremor, contraction, decreased appetite, nausea, decreased speaking ability, and bedwetting in sleep. In these situations, the positive aspects of the servant should be explained to the child by the parents. People with whom he can communicate when he has problems during school time can be determined. It will be beneficial for teachers to be inclusive, not to exclude the child, and to work with parents on solution-oriented solutions even if they have difficulties in coping.

Family and educator are important against school fear.

Specialist Psychologist Merve Uyar says, “The child who cannot cope with the anxiety that occurs when they are separated from their parents may not have the ability to calm themselves. For this reason, they may not want to go to school because they cannot cope with anxiety. The home environment is a safe space for the child. He needs time to say I am strong when he is separated from his mother. Parents and teachers should not act hastily and insistently in the adaptation process of children to school and should understand the child's feelings and thoughts. It should not be forgotten that every child is unique and should not be compared with other children/siblings.”

“The reaction to anxiety determines the personalities of children”

Stating that almost all children experience fear and anxiety when faced with a threatening situation, whether real or imagined, Uyar said, “Actually, having a reasonable level of fear motivates people to learn something new. Whether perceived fear takes the form of school, doctor, witch or snake, all children face stressful situations in their daily lives, and this prepares the conditions for the change and development that takes them from childhood to adolescence. Reaction patterns to anxiety vary according to personality traits and developmental levels. In order to reduce children's anxiety, thinking errors need to be corrected. Those who have anxiety problems may have a sensitive temperament or may have encountered psychological problems in the early stages of development. The greatest pressure on children worldwide is school success. In Turkey, especially children are struggling with exam anxiety and stress. When children are enjoying an experience, they are likely learning something. It is very important for him to enjoy school, learn, socialize and express his feelings. For this reason, we can encounter oppressive attitudes even with tables leading to bedwetting in children.”
