These Could Be a Sign of Hernia!

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Ahmet İnanır gave important information about the subject. What is a herniated disc, and with what findings does it occur? What is neck hernia? What are the symptoms? What are the treatment options?

What is a herniated disc, and with what findings does it occur?

Lumbar hernia is a condition in which the jelly-like soft part, which is located between the vertebrae and acts as a suspension, protrudes beyond the hard outer capsule and causes pain, numbness, tingling or loss of strength by applying pressure or pressure to the nerves. The pain increases with coughing, straining and laughing. Standing, sitting, and leaning forward increase the pain. Herniation occurs when there is weakening or tearing of the outer ring of the disc due to factors such as excessive weight, a sudden tension caused by lifting heavy loads, aging and degeneration. Especially sudden onset hernias are caused by heavy lifting, trauma or sudden movement. In some patients, on the other hand, attacks of painful low back pain, which pass spontaneously in a short period of time, are seen. Most of the time, patients do not care about this as they recover, but in the end, severe low back pain and pain may begin in these patients, and even serious hernias may develop. These complaints become life-threatening to the patients. In midline lumbar hernia, the patient usually feels the pain in the lower back. On the other hand, in hernias that go to the side, the pain usually manifests itself by spreading to one leg. Numbness in the leg, loss of strength, loss of reflexes and balance may occur with pain. The patient may also have difficulty sitting and walking. lumbar disc herniation may not cause any symptoms.

What is neck hernia? What are the symptoms?

Neck hernia occurs as a result of the soft part in the middle of the cartilage disc between the vertebrae tearing the layers around it and overflowing. If the protruding disc material herniates from the middle part of the spinal canal, it can press on the spinal cord, and if it herniates from the side of the canal, it can press on the nerves going to the arm. In hernias originating from the middle section, the person may feel the pain in their shoulders, neck and shoulder blades or back. In lateral hernias, the patient may present with pain in the arm and numbness in the hand, tingling or a feeling of weakness. All these findings can develop in a way that negatively affects people's daily life. The person's wrong movements regarding his/her posture, stress, tension, inactivity, overweight problems are the basis for neck hernia. predisposing factors. Individuals with a tense and stressful personality structure are a potential candidate for neck hernia.

What are the treatment options?

Associate Professor. Ahmet İnanır said, “It is worth noting that applications targeting only pain are not approved. The patient with lumbar hernia should be examined and treated by a specialist physician who is absolutely competent in the subject. The most important issue is which treatment is needed or not. There should be no neglected method. In this respect, it is very important to seek and find a competent teacher who can make this decision correctly. The priority in treatment should be the education of the patient. The patient should be taught the correct posture, bending, load bearing, lying and sitting position. The vast majority of lumbar hernias heal without surgery or can become harmless. Even if the patient has progressive loss of strength in the waist, neck, legs, arms and hands, it is a mistake to recommend surgery immediately. If it does not respond to treatment and progresses despite treatment, surgical decision will be an appropriate attitude. The treatment should aim to return the herniated part to its place. Surgery, on the other hand, aims to remove and discard the leaking part of the disc. Since neck surgeries are performed from the anterior part of the neck, it makes it inevitable to put a supplemental artificial system. Low back surgeries further weaken the basic load-bearing base of the spine. In this context, the back and neck patient should be handled very carefully and a surgical approach should not be envisaged without a commission decision.
