Facia Alert for Kanal Istanbul! Anticipated Earthquake Can Be Affected By 9-10 Severity; Science Academy Member Dr. Naci Görür made remarkable statements about the Kanal Istanbul project. Emphasizing the risks that the project will create in Istanbul, Görür said, “During the excavation of the canal, there will be excessive sliding, landslide and collapses according to the ground properties. If the expected earthquake occurs, the Marmara mouth of the channel will be affected at the severity of 9-10 and it is possible to suffer serious damage. ”
Saying that approximately 1-1,5 billion m3 material will be excavated and the ecosystem, fauna and flora in this area will be severely destroyed, Görür said, “Probably islets will be formed in Marmara. Considering the active fault system in Marmara, this work will be extremely risky. During the excavation of the channel, there will be excessive slippage, landslides and collapses according to the ground characteristics. ”
“9-10 CAN BE AFFECTED IN VIOLENCE”
Noting the possible earthquake in Istanbul, Görür said, irse If the expected earthquake occurs, the Marmara mouth of the Channel will be affected by the intensity of 9-10. It is possible that a structure with zero tolerance to horizontal and vertical movement, such as a canal, can suffer severe damage from this earthquake (or subsequent ones). Kul
Görür evaluated the project in terms of geosciences and earthquakes by sharing some maps and listed the following:
1- PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT: Istanbul Bosphorus to provide ease of passage to ships, to prevent accidents and provide income.
2- ROUTE: It will be excavated along the valley between Küçükçekmece-Terkos Lake. It will be the width and depth that a single ship can pass.
3-SOIL (Geology): The channel will cut the Miocene and younger, more problematic soils (sediments) in the Küçük Çekmece region and will gradually enter the Eocene-Oligocene units. This floor is composed of very hard limestones and relatively softer claystone, siltstone, sandstone and marls. The entrance of the channel to the Black Sea consists of flimsy ground. If this channel is excavated, it is inevitable that:
a) Approximately 1-1,5 billion m3 material will be excavated. Excavation of this material will take years, excavation machinery and explosives will be used, so the valley and its surrounding ecosystem, fauna and flora will be largely destroyed.
b) It is not possible to lay a material of this size anywhere. Probably, islets will be formed in Marmara. Considering the active fault system in Marmara, this work will be extremely risky.
c) During the excavation of the channel, there will be excessive slippage, landslides and collapses depending on the soil properties.
d) When excavated to the sea level, the channel will operate as a drainage system and will destroy the underground water reservoirs around the channel and cause salinization in the region.
e) The region between the channel and the Bosphorus will become an island, so all transportation systems will be changed and difficult. Especially the structures that will pass over the Canal will be more risky and costly due to altitude and ground conditions. The separation of this island from Thrace may also be a military risk.
f) Istanbul is waiting for an earthquake. If the expected earthquake occurs, the Marmara mouth of the Channel will be affected by the intensity of 9-10. A structure with zero tolerance to horizontal and vertical movement, such as a canal, can be seriously damaged by this earthquake (or subsequent ones).
g) According to the authorities, there will be a city of at least 3 million around the Channel. This will increase the earthquake risk. Overpopulation means loss of life and property.
h) The channel will merge the Black Sea, one of the world's most polluted seas, and the currently dying Marmara. All the industrial pollution of Central Europe will be filled to Marmara.
I) Oceanographic system of Marmara will be disrupted and oxygen consumption in this sea will be accelerated. This will make living conditions more difficult. As can be seen, such a project has a lump sum rather than a return. Moreover, instead of this project which will cost billions of dollars, much more essential works of the country can be done. With today's technology, traffic in the Bosphorus can be monitored and controlled much more safely. This is both cheaper and for the benefit of the country.
