The End of İzmir Motorway Bay Crossing Bridge Has Been Neared

The Gebze-Orhangazi-İzmir (Including İzmit Bay Crossing and Connection Roads) Motorway Project, which was tendered by the General Directorate of Highways with the Build-Operate-Transfer model, covers 384 kilometers, including 49 kilometers of highway and 433 kilometers of connection roads. In the project where work continues on a total of 12 reinforced concrete viaducts, 2 in the Gebze-Orhangazi-Bursa section and 14 in the Kemalpaşa Junction-İzmir section, 6 viaducts between Gebze and Bursa were completed.

One of the most important pillars of this project, the construction of the İzmit Bay Crossing Bridge, continues uninterruptedly. The production of bridge towers, which started to be manufactured in July 38, on caisson foundations weighing 404 tons, which were immersed in the sea after being manufactured on land, has been completed. Unlike similar bridges in Turkey, the bridge towers, which were manufactured in steel in Gemlik and brought to the construction site, reached 2014 meters in height, were made by welding 254 steel blocks to each other. It was stated that each of these parts weighed between 88 tons and 350 tons.


After the completion of the bridge towers, work was started for laying the main cable between the two sides. The main cable for the main cable that will carry the grid is carried out with great care. The guide cable pulled by private tugboats is pulled under the sea before along the bridge line. After the guide cable reaches the opposite shore, the cranes on the 254 meter giant bridge towers will be lifted. In May, 2015 will begin laying the first boards.


It is stated that the middle span of the bridge, which is planned to be 2 thousand 682 meters in total, will be 1500 meters and it will be the fourth bridge with the largest middle span in the world. When the bridge is finished, it will serve as 3 lanes, 3 departures and 6 arrivals. The bridge will also have a service lane. While 1350 people are currently working at the construction site, the works continue for 24 hours. When the Gulf Crossing bridge is completed, the current time of passing the gulf from 70 minutes by circumnavigating the bay and an hour by ferry will be reduced to an average of 6 minutes. The cost of crossing the Izmit Bay Crossing Bridge, which was built with an investment of 1.1 billion dollars, will be 35 dollars plus VAT.
