Great Success in Chennai Metro Phase 2 Construction

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has passed an important milestone in the construction of Corridor 4 of the Phase 2 Project. With the completion of the last U-beam at Voyalanallur Foundry Site, the prefabrication work on this 8-kilometre section has come to an end. This achievement is seen as a critical step in the expansion of urban infrastructure and sustainable mobility goals in Chennai.

Technical Achievements of Corridor 4

The completed 8-kilometre Corridor 4 line includes nine stations and a complexly engineered 4-kilometre double-deck viaduct. This viaduct has both metro lines and an elevated motorway.

• Prefabricated Elements: 3,410 prefabricated elements, including U-beams, I-beams, scaffold caps and railings, were successfully fabricated and installed throughout the project.
• Material Utilisation: A total of 122,000 cubic metres of concrete and 18,000 tonnes of steel were used in construction, bringing the total amount of structural materials to over 240,000 tonnes.
• Safety: Despite this large-scale and complex project, CMRL has achieved a significant success in the field of occupational safety by ensuring that there was not a single major accident at the construction site.

Sensitivity and Co-operation Played a Key Role

Highly advanced modelling techniques and simulations were used to solve alignment and dimensional issues without compromising accuracy and speed for challenging structures such as double-tier viaducts.

TheVoyalanallur Foundry‘s key role in production was ensured by the teams’ focus on continuous casting and strict quality management. CMRL worked closely with the AEON Consortium and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on the massive logistics and construction process. The handover ceremony emphasised teamwork and safety as key elements of the project’s success.
