Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) listens to every segment of society without discrimination. Yavuz Saltık, Head of IMM's Office of Headman of Headman, who met with Roman citizens, listened to the problems of novels and explained that IMM carries out works that embrace all segments of society without discrimination.

The headmen of the neighborhoods in Istanbul, where Roma citizens live heavily, came together at the event organized by the Zero Discrimination Association and supported by the IMM Department of Headman's Affairs. CHP Deputy Chairman for Social Policies Prof. Dr. Yüksel Taşkın, Head of IMM's Office of the Head of Mukhtar Yavuz Saltık, Chairman of the Federation of All Istanbul Muhtar Associations Selami Aykut and Chairman of the Zero Discrimination Association Elmas Arus attended.

Headmen who came to the event, which took place in Zeytinburnu Çırpıcı Social Facilities, talked about the problems faced by Roma.

ROMANS LIVE IN DEEP POVERTY

The headmen of the neighborhoods where the Roma live intensely emphasized that they live in deep poverty. Noting that the social assistance provided to the Roma is insufficient, the muhtars noted that the Roma cannot access education opportunities due to poverty. Noting that they lost their previous occupations such as basketry, blacksmithing and blacksmithing due to the disappearance of production areas during the urbanization process, and that they faced the problem of unemployment, the muhtars shared that this problem brought with it crime and substance addiction, especially for young people.

The headmen also mentioned that the Romanies have a housing problem due to the fact that they have to leave their settlements, especially with the urban transformation processes.

SALTIK: OUR SERVICE POLICY IS EQUAL TO ALL SECTIONS

Yavuz Saltık, Head of the IMM's Office of Headman, said that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality continues its activities in a way that includes social groups that cannot reach equal rights, based on the vision included in the 2020-2024 Strategic Plan. In this context, Saltık drew attention to the fact that the Roma constitute one of the most vulnerable segments of the urban poor, and said: “Roma need social policies, especially in terms of access to education and the right to housing. It is necessary to build spaces for Roma, where they can both perform their socio-cultural activities and serve as an intermediary in developing relations with other segments of the society.” he said.

ARUS: ROMANS CREATE THE LOWEST CLASS OF SOCIETY

Chairman of the Zero Discrimination Association Elmas Arus stated that Roma citizens constitute the lowest class of the society because they are not at the center of central and local social policies in Turkey. Pointing out that the Roma are excluded and have problems in accessing public services, Elmas Arus emphasized the importance of meeting with the headmen to solve the problems of the Roma.

CHP Deputy Chairman for Social Policies Prof. Dr. Yüksel Taşkın stated that permanent policies to be produced for the problems faced by Romani citizens should be focused on children of pre-school education age and employment areas should be created. prof. Dr. Taşkın also underlined that the Family Insurance Support developed within this scope is an important step in solving the problems.
