An informative meeting was held before the Atatürk Street Infrastructure and Superstructure Renovation Project, which will start in November with the coordination of Alanya Municipality and will consist of 6 stages. Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik shared all the details about the project and answered the questions of the participants.
Alanya Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik, Deputy Mayors, Council Members, representatives of political parties, mukhtars, department managers, institutional representatives, heads of chambers and associations and members of the press attended the meeting held in the Municipality Assembly Hall.
rENOVATED AFTER 45 YEARS
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, President Özçelik emphasised that Atatürk Street, one of the busiest arteries of Alanya, is now “outdated” and continued as follows, “Atatürk Street and its infrastructure were built in the 1980s. There has not been a proper replacement and renewal work on the street since those years and nowadays it has reached its expiry date. Especially last year and this year, we came to the time when the water lines on the street said ‘change me’. The population increased and it was necessary to increase the water pressure. Therefore, it exceeded the withstand pressure and there were explosions in many places. We had problems with electricity, the power was not enough and the capacity of the lines had to be increased. Natural gas is now slowly coming to our city. After we made this big investment, we thought that it should not be dug again and again; we invited all companies and institutions related to electricity, water, natural gas, internet. Until now, we have tried to bring together such big investors, organise them all and finish this work. All of them except ASAT are international companies, they make their investment programmes months in advance. We held 4 meetings with the institutions. Then technical meetings continued. We have planned to start the first digging in the first week of November. We have decided that ASAT will start the work and then all companies will gradually start the work. We will start with the first stage from Alaaddin Keykubat Statue to Türkmenbaşı Street.”
PRESIDENT ÖZÇELİK: WE WILL MOVE FORWARD BY CONSIDERING THE RAIL SYSTEM
Stating that they took the rail system, which is one of the projects considered for Alanya in the coming period, into consideration while making the project, Mayor Özçelik said, “Considering the rail system, the internet lines were completely pushed to the pavements. We leave the refuge empty for the rail system. Only lighting cables will be installed. If the rail system starts to be built after we finish our plan project and get approval from the relevant institutions, the only problem of the company that receives that tender will be the lighting lines and the irrigation system you call drip. Trees will not be cut because these works are being done in the region. If the tree is not exactly in the middle of the road or rotten, we will remove it and plant a new one instead.” Answering the questions at the end of the meeting, President Özçelik thanked all participants for their suggestions and support.
PRESIDENT ÖZÇELIK: IMPORTANT FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR CITY
Stating that the work will cause some difficulties but these investments are mandatory for the future of the city, Mayor Özçelik said, “This process will continue as much as the season and weather allows us. If we have a very rainy season, the process may be prolonged a little bit, but if not, we want to enter the season in May with all the infrastructures completed and the asphalt and pavements finished. The issue you all complain about is that someone pours asphalt and 15 days later they come and dig it up. We have tried to prevent this. I wish you all to know that it will be a difficult process. It will be a troublesome process for the tradesmen, there will be problems in transportation, but when we consider a water line that has not been changed for 45 years and constantly cut electricity, these have to be done. I have personally visited the field with CK, we will make small changes in the transformer locations and we will ensure that this work is completed. My wish from you is that we may have traffic problems when travelling from one place to another, but we have to do it in these months, not in the middle of summer during the tourism season. No matter whoever, no matter which administration, this work would have been done at this time. Let us all know that this is necessary for Alanya. I don’t think anyone wants to drink water from a 50 year old pipe and I don’t think anyone wants to be without electricity in the middle of summer. There will be those who will also reproach you during this period. We kindly ask you to support us by explaining that this is necessary,” he said.
KOÇAK IT WAS NOT EASY TO BRING ALL THESE COMPANIES TOGETHER
Murat Levent Koçak, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality, explained the technical details of the project and drew attention to the difficulties of including different infrastructure institutions in the same schedule. Deputy Mayor Koçak said, “There is a serious preparation behind this meeting. In order for an infrastructure company to make an investment in a place, it is necessary to make a programme, make a tender, find a contractor and make a payment. We did our first hot asphalt work in Demirtaş. 15 days later, an infrastructure company asked for an excavation permit. That place had been unpaved for 9 months. When we asked them, they said that they could not find a contractor and now they found one. They said that investment was a must there, which was indeed the case. In this dilemma, we had to give permission for excavation. The 9 excavating companies all have different investments and tender conditions, so it was not easy to bring the 8 most active companies together under these conditions. In March, we warned them to include this place in their investment programmes so that it would not be excavated again and again. Everyone did their work and organised their investments accordingly. Our President showed a clear will not to excavate this place again. It was necessary to make such a coordination since the natural gas investment would also come. Those who use the area know that ASAT is repairing faults between the current Directorate of National Education and ALTSO. There is also the problem of the unknown underground. Alanya Municipality had a very good urban information system for years and all these numerical data should have been processed, but the merger of the municipalities in 2014 caused a digital apocalypse for local governments. Since the municipality boundaries were expanded, the information system could not be built and could not be fully processed. So it is a mystery what goes where. Last week, the bank on Atatürk Street had to be closed due to a water malfunction. The reason; the drinking water line passes right in front of the door of the bank. Companies investing in a certain order should make their investments horizontally underground in the period we are moving towards 2026. There are legal limits between the lines and our technical colleagues have done their work on this issue. In fact, we are saying the following with all these things. This was an obligation for us.”
KOÇAK: WE PLAN TO GO IN STAGES
Stating that the first part of the project will be carried out in 6 stages, Deputy Mayor Koçak said, “The works will start on 3 November 2025 from Alaaddin Keykubat Monument to the east. Turkmenbasi Street, that is, until the place where Alaaddin Beach Hotel is located. ASAT will enter from the front, CK will enter 10 days later, ENERYA will enter simultaneously for natural gas, and internet companies will continue on the pavement. The second stage is from Türkmenbaşı Street to the triangular junction where Güzelyalı Street starts. The third stage is between the triangular junction and Kale Market. The fourth stage is the junction between Kale Market and the Directorate of National Education. The fifth stage will be to Bostancıpınarı Street and the sixth stage will be from Bostancıpınarı Street to Atatürk Monument. Our excavation line will be on the north side. In the meantime, we will make the south road round trip. We want to go from junction to junction as much as possible, but there are many parameters. There are problems between climate, storm water channels. We plan to go in stages. When we come to the Atatürk Monument, this time we will move to the south side and complete it. When the infrastructure is completed, the investment production goes towards the east, but we will see whether we can go or not. Whatsapp groups were established here with infrastructure companies. Alanya Municipality Directorate of Public Works will work as a coordinator and there will be weekly meetings. We will also be there. A new drinking water line electricity line is being laid. While these lines are being renewed, they will be given to the building entrances, so the pavements will also be excavated. Internet companies will also make a vertical transition in that way. We will organise the superstructure side of this work. Apart from our Directorate of Public Works, there will also be a study on lighting infrastructure. It will be completed within this process in order to prevent re-excavation.”
PRESIDENT ÖZÇELİK: ALANYA WILL GET RID OF THE DARK IMAGE
Stating that the works related to lighting will continue in this process, Mayor Özçelik said, “We will make the infrastructure for lighting and only erecting poles will remain. If it is completed in time for the season, we will finish the other works. The tender has been done, but it is not technically correct for us to build there without these works. The lighting infrastructure in the area from Oba to Alaaddin Keykubat Monument will be completely changed and made ready. We have more or less finished our work and we will hang information on the refuges. We will also inform our tradesmen with brochures. We thought we should hold this meeting so that we can all be informed. Everyone should prepare themselves. Our hoteliers also need to organise their own work. I thank everyone for the strong cooperation. I think you know that this work is done for Alanya and I believe that you will support our municipality apart from politics. We will work in coordination and all these institutions will be informed about the situation and determine the working principle. A lighting work was carried out in Tosmur. We do not hesitate to call it successful and successful. It is very good. In order to have a standard in Alanya, the lighting tender was completed in the same way from that region to Alaaddin Keykubat Monument. Since we are doing 95 per cent of the work with the same type of poles and poles approved by the Ministry of Energy, we will do a work whose invoice is covered by CK. We will save the centre of Alanya from this darkness. When Atatürk Street is completed, this lighting work will be carried out from one end of the 25-metre road to the other in 2027.”
PRESIDENT OZCELIK: ELECTRICITY LINES OF HOTELS AND RESIDENCES WILL BE SEPARATED
Stating that the electricity and water problems on Atatürk Street will disappear, Mayor Özçelik said, “The lines of all hotels will be separated from the residences. If it beats, it will be the conditional of a hotel. Now the hotels get it from the same place like housing. We have placed the transformers as much as possible so as not to create visual pollution. We will also lay the natural gas line here and natural gas will not come here immediately. They will pump nitrogen gas into it to prevent digging. Alanya has plans to distribute natural gas within 5 years. We are also putting that line in order not to dig Atatürk Street. They will only give outlets and when natural gas comes, they will give gas from there.”
