Date under the Konak Tunnel

History emerges from under the Konak Tunnel: Archaeological excavations in the places where the Konak Tunnel passes are over. In these studies, the bones of more than 900 people who came from Jewish tombs were delivered to the Jewish community and transferred to the Jewish Cemetery in Gürçeşme. In addition, the mosaics and frescos unearthed during the excavations were recorded for display at the Archeology Museum.
The cemetery unearthed in the gathering area of ​​the people known as maşatlık in Konak, where tunnel works were conducted, was known as one of the oldest cemeteries in Izmir. Some of the cemeteries in this area were transported to another place in the 1930s, during the reign of Rahmi Bey, the Governor of Izmir at the time. The bone of more than 900 people emerged from the Jewish tombs unearthed during the excavations in the Konak Tunnel. The bones found were delivered to the Jewish community and transferred to the Jewish Cemetery in Gürçeşme.
