Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is significantly improving passenger safety by making travelling safer in the metropolis with the newly installed anti-friction door system that automatically stops the train by detecting objects stuck in the train doors. This innovative system is a proactive move aimed at preventing accidents, especially those caused by clothing entrapment.
Chennai Metro Expands Safety Innovation and Reliability
CMRL has started installing anti-friction door systems on all Phase I trainsets. For the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of this system, Faiveley Transport Rail Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. was awarded a contract worth $5.8 million.
This new technology can detect even lightweight materials, such as sari ends or bag straps, and apply the emergency brakes if necessary. It also triggers an immediate warning notification on the driver’s console, helping to avoid any injuries and service delays. This service directly addresses the needs of a large number of travellers in Chennai, especially women wearing traditional attire. CMRL states that this initiative is not a reaction to specific incidents, but rather a proactive investment in passenger safety.
Chennai Metro Sets Global Standards in Urban Rail Safety
CMRL has confirmed that every new train under Phase II will be equipped with anti-friction system as a safety feature. This system also provides a standardised operational approach to protect the network from a variety of threats. Prior to large-scale implementation, engineers are implementing a standardised operation where they will test the system to ensure there are no service interruptions. CMRL also makes arrangements for in-service training to maintain the technical competence of staff.
By adopting this technology, the Chennai Metro Rail is making Chennai a model of sustainable and safety-focused urban transport, besides increasing the sense of trust among passengers. This initiative will strengthen the transport network in Chennai and help India move towards safer mobility solutions.
