Hurstbridge Line Tunnel Strengthens Melbourne Network

The nearing completion of construction of the Hurstbridge Line tunnel, a major upgrade project aimed at future-proofing Melbourne’s transport network, marks a significant achievement in the comprehensive network strengthening effort that significantly improves safety, reliability and connectivity between regions.

Hurstbridge Line Tunnel Stimulates Infrastructure Renewal

Melbourne is upgrading its transport network with the completion of the final construction phase of the Hurstbridge Line tunnel between Grimshaw Street and Elder Street in Watsonia. at over 500 metres long, this new extension is one of Melbourne’s longest train tunnels after the City Loop Metro Tunnel.

Workers quickly completed the reconstruction of the Grimshaw Street Bridge and widened the tunnel during an intensive 30-day construction programme. This improved both track and train efficiency, enabling trains to run with minimal disruption to flow. Engineers upgraded the tunnels by improving the safety of the tunnel walls, as well as renewing the old railway tracks and bridges. As a result of this improvement, the railway line will be able to handle a higher frequency of trains in the future.

Hurstbridge Line Tunnel Boosts Reliability and Growth

Passenger train services resumed shortly after the completion of major works. Fine tuning is scheduled to continue early next year as engineers assess signalling systems, overhead lines and drainage. According to the Victorian Government, the project will support the“M80 Freeway Completion Initiative” as well as improving the reliability of the network. New signalling and power solutions will enable passengers to enjoy a faster and smoother journey.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said it was “a major achievement that reflects the high level of co-operation between Commonwealth, state and local stakeholders”. King emphasised that the project takes a sustainable approach to investing in Australia’s railways. As the transport network in Melbourne continues to develop, this tunnel extension will contribute to stabilising the population, especially in areas expected to create jobs. Australian infrastructure development experts argue that such projects should be rolled out across the country in the form of tunnel improvement initiatives.
