Great Success in Chennai Metro Phase 2 Construction

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has passed an important milestone in the construction of Phase 2, Corridor 4. With the completion of the last U-girder at the Voyalanallur Casting Yard, the prefabrication work of this 8-kilometer section has been completed. This achievement is seen as a critical step in expanding Chennai’s urban infrastructure and achieving sustainable mobility goals.

Technical Achievements of Corridor 4

The completed 8-kilometer Corridor 4 line includes nine stations and a 4-kilometer double-deck viaduct requiring complex engineering. This viaduct accommodates both metro lines and an elevated roadway.

  • Prefabricated Elements: Throughout the project, a total of 3,410 prefabricated components, including U-girders, I-girders, pier caps, and railings, were successfully produced and installed.
  • Material Usage: A total of 122,000 cubic meters of concrete and 18,000 tons of steel were used in construction, bringing the total structural material amount to over 240,000 tons.
  • Safety: Despite this large-scale and complex project, CMRL achieved an important success by ensuring that no major accidents occurred at the construction site.

Precision and Collaboration Played a Key Role

Highly advanced modeling techniques and simulations were used to address alignment and dimensional issues without compromising precision and speed, especially for challenging structures like the double-deck viaduct.

The key role of Voyalanallur Casting Yard was ensured through the continuous focus of teams on casting and strict quality management. CMRL carried out this massive logistics and construction process in close collaboration with AEON Consortium and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) companies. During the handover ceremony, teamwork and safety were emphasized as fundamental elements of the project’s success.
