A common walkability manifesto was prepared within the scope of the “Promise to Istanbul: Walkability Vision” project with the cooperation of the IMM Pedestrian Access Directorate and WRI Turkey. In the manifesto, “Walkable, livable Istanbul will be planned jointly. It will be accessible, barrier-free and sustainable for all.” The project aims to improve the decision-making processes of municipality, NGO and private sector representatives regarding pedestrian transportation.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Department of Transportation, Transportation Planning Branch Directorate, Pedestrian Access Chief, and WRI Turkey Sustainable Cities implemented together in the Promise to Istanbul: Walkability Vision project has entered a new phase. A common “walkability” manifesto was prepared within the scope of the project, which enabled the municipality, NGO and private sector working together in the field of walkability to better understand the problems, needs and approaches experienced.

A PARTICIPANT PROCESS WAS CONDUCTED

Project preparations were carried out through a participatory process involving stakeholders in Istanbul. Within the scope of the project, meetings were held with three groups consisting of municipal units, NGOs and private sector representatives who have a share in the use of urban areas and urban transportation. Stakeholders shared their ideas at the workshops. Promise to Istanbul: Walkability Vision, a six-month project in total, was implemented with the support of the Embassy and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands MATRA (Social Transformation) Fund.

“PEDESTRIAN TRANSPORTATION WILL BE MORE COMFORTABLE AND SAFE”

Utku Cihan, Head of IMM Transportation Department, said, “The synergy of all stakeholders, municipal units, civil society and private sector operating in this field is important in order to make a city walkable. In this six-month project, which we signed together with WRI Turkey as the IMM Transportation Department, there are representatives of the municipality, civil society and private sector, all of whom work directly or indirectly in the field of walkability, in order to make pedestrian transportation safer and more comfortable.”

“MANIFESTO PREPARED WITH STAKEHOLDERS”

One of the project partners, WRI Turkey Sustainable Urban Development Senior Manager Dr. Çiğdem Çörek Öztaş said:

“Among the three manifestos, the manifest prepared for the municipality by the representatives of the private sector and civil society was selected in the voting made with the participation of all stakeholders. A common manifesto was created with the additions made by the participants to this text. In addition, in line with the chosen manifesto, a communication campaign was designed to be shared on social media and to raise awareness about walkability.”
