The first bridge to vehicular traffic connecting Russia and China was opened to freight traffic on Friday, as Beijing and Moscow approached each other as they were isolated from the diplomacy scene.
Most of the construction of the bridge over the Amur River, which connects Russia's Blagoveshchensk and China's Heihe cities by land, was completed in the last months of 2019. Previously, intercity trips were made by boat in summer and by floating bridges and frozen lake in winter.
At the opening ceremony on Friday, white, blue and red fireworks were fired, and freight trucks crossed the newly opened bridge for the first time.
The highway bridge connecting China's Heihe and Russia's Blagoveşensk, located on both sides of the Amur River, is 80 meters long. The bridge, which has been under construction since 2016, cost 19 billion rubles.
