Applications have started for the Respect for History Local Conservation Awards, which have become the symbol of sensitivity to history in Izmir, organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. It is possible to participate in the competition until the end of the working day on Friday, August 19th.

The Respect for History Local Conservation Awards, organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality with the aim of preserving and repairing the historical buildings in the city and creating urban and local awareness, will find their owners this year after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. "Life in a Historical Building", "Keeping Traditional Crafts Alive in Historical Places", "Simple Repair", "Massive Repair by Changing the Original Function", for the competition open to all works related to Izmir, which protects, preserves and contributes to the historical heritage, and " Applications will be accepted in the categories of "Substantial Repairs Preserving the Original Function", "Labor", "Contribution" and "School Projects Encouragement on Historical and Cultural Heritage".

Award program awarded

The jury of the Europa Nostra Awards (European Cultural Heritage Awards), one of the world's most important conservation institutions, honored the "Respect for History Local Conservation Awards" with an honorable mention in 2021.

Results will be announced on 19 September

Award Categories

Life in a Historic Building Award
Despite the changes created by the urbanization process, it will be given to the owners of the building, which is determined by the jury, which preserves and maintains its historical structure within the borders of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and continues to use it with its original function, and that it has succeeded in preserving the building as much as possible. The building must have the characteristics of a cultural property that needs to be preserved.

Survival of Traditional Crafts in Historical Place Award
This award will be given to artisans (weaver, coppersmith, felt maker, saddle maker, nali maker, leather maker, etc.) who make long-term traditional production in the historical place, contribute to the historical-spatial texture, and operate within the scope of intangible local cultural heritage. Candidates must have rare knowledge that has enabled the practice and survival of the craft for at least 15 years, trained in a master-apprentice relationship, and sustaining the disappearing craft.

Major Repair Awards
Preserving and repairing the buildings with their original space-facade setup, construction technique, materials, decoration elements and details, parcel elements (outbuilding, pool, well, wall, floor covering, tree, arbor, etc.) will be taken as a basis. The transformation implemented due to the functional change should make it possible to preserve and read the building-plot relationship and the indoor-outdoor organization of the building.

Labor Award
This award will be given to masters or teams of masters who contribute to the production with their efforts by preserving and masterfully maintaining the traces of a building tradition that has been going on from the past to the present, in applications made under the category of “Conservation Practices at a Single Building Scale”.

Contribution Award in Conservation of Historical Environment and Cultural Heritage
This award; It will be given to works that bring the issue of preserving the historical environment and cultural assets to the agenda with a concrete product through written and visual works related to the local context of İzmir, creating a platform for public discussion, opening the horizon and providing all of these together. Undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and dissertations, as well as articles, proceedings book, CD of proceedings and similar academic works will not be nominated for the award.

School Projects Encouragement Award on Historical and Cultural Heritage
Student studies prepared at primary and secondary education level will be evaluated in this category. The award will be given to the respective school. It was determined as the main goal to honor the efforts of children and young people under the leadership of the educational institution they are affiliated with in order to develop their sensitivity to historical heritage and the environment, to create and spread a conservation culture. In this category, exhibitions, school magazines, documentaries, research, drama, dance, poetry activities and similar written and visual products will be evaluated.
