As the 2021 Formula 1 season draws to a close, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Team announced its 2022 squad. The new owner of the seat vacated by Valtteri Bottas, who announced that he would move to Alfa Romeo Racing, was George Russell. Russell will team up with Lewis Hamilton from 2022.
George Russell, 2017, joined the Mercedes Young Driver Program in 23, winning that season's GP3 Series title the year he joined the program, and became the FIA Formula 2 Champion the following year. Continuing his career in Formula 2019 with Williams since 1, Russell will be the driver of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Team from the 2022 season, after three successful seasons with Williams.
Since joining Mercedes in 2017, Valtteri Bottas has achieved 9 race wins, 54 podiums and 17 pole positions. Bottas also played a crucial role in Mercedes' four-time constructors' championship.
