French President Emmanuel Macron announced a 10-month military service program in which young people will participate voluntarily. This initiative is being implemented to strengthen the national defense capacity and increase the level of preparedness against potential threats. The program envisages that young people aged 18–19 will serve only in mainland France and its overseas regions, and the targeted annual participation capacity is set to reach 50,000 people.
The first phase of the scope will start in 2026 and will be implemented with the participation of 3,000 volunteers. This number will increase steadily over time. The system offers a complex structure in which volunteers play an important role in addition to professional soldiers and reserves.
Growing Concerns and Regional Impacts
Under the influence of the increasing threat perception on Europe, countries are reconsidering their defense strategies. Particularly countries such as Serbia and Croatia have reintroduced compulsory military service. While Serbia reintroduced 75 days of compulsory service, Croatia brought back basic military training after 17 years, which it suspended in 2008. While these steps strengthen regional security concerns,It also affects Europe’s defense policies and troop deployment plans.
