German defence industry giant Rheinmetall and VMZ (Vazovski Mashinostroitelni Zavodi), one of Bulgaria’s leading companies, are establishing a giant joint venture that will significantly increase Europe’s defence and ammunition production capacity. The joint venture will focus on the development and production of artillery ammunition and energetic materials. According to the statement made by the company, the total amount of this strategic investment will reach approximately 1 billion Euros, which is one of the largest investments in ammunition production in recent years.
A New Defence Base in the Balkans: Shares and Location
The share distribution in the established joint venture was determined: Rheinmetall will be the majority shareholder with a Q share, while VMZ will be a partner with an I share. The production facility, which will cover a large area of approximately 100 hectares, will be located in the Sopot region of Bulgaria. Once operational, this large facility is expected to create around 1,000 jobs in the region. This is seen as a step that will not only increase defence capacity but also contribute to regional development.
High Production Capacity and Targeted Dates
The annual production targets of the joint venture are quite ambitious. The facility will produce approximately 100,000 pieces of artillery ammunition and up to 150,000 pieces of propelling powder per year. In addition, approximately 1,300 tonnes of gunpowder will be produced. A significant portion of this capacity is planned to support VMZ’s existing activities. According to the production schedule, the production of ammunition casings is expected to start in 2027, while the production of energetic materials is expected to start in 2028.
Rheinmetall CEO: Support to NATO and EU Defence Capabilities
Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, emphasised the strategic importance of this partnership. “With the new production facility, we are further expanding our leading role as a manufacturer of artillery ammunition to continue supporting the defence capabilities of the European Union and NATO,” Papperger said, adding that they were grateful for the Bulgarian government’s confidence in their capabilities. This statement shows that the initiative serves not only a commercial but also a geopolitical purpose.
Europe Accelerates Production to Meet Increasing Demand
The war in Ukraine has led to a rapid increase in demand for ammunition across Europe. To meet this challenging demand growth, Europe is focused on expanding its production capacity. The continent’s leading defence companies, such as Rheinmetall, are establishing strategic joint ventures in different countries, such as this partnership in Bulgaria. The aim of these initiatives is both to ensure the production of ammunition in line with NATO standards and to strengthen Europe’s collective security by overcoming bottlenecks in the supply chain.
