Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya and their entourage made various visits to Silivri. Minister Ersoy, who attended the opening of Silivri Municipality Exchange Museum House, said in his speech that they are adding new ones to their culture and art venues day by day, while doing this, they are striving to keep every detail of culture, art and history alive and to leave a legacy for future generations.

Mentioning that they implemented projects and works one by one in order to keep the national memory and identity alive, Ersoy gave information about the history of the region and the population exchange process.

Pointing out that the exchange took place after the “Convention and Protocol Concerning the Exchange of Turkish and Greek Peoples” signed on January 30, 1923, Ersoy noted:

“Exchange is a very complex expression of experience. It represents a profound change in people's lives at the turning point of history, at the dawn of our Republic rising from the embers of the Ottoman Empire. The exchange is to break away from the lands that were once homeland and to make a way to Anatolia, which is the eternal homeland. It is to leave behind the houses in which many generations have grown up, infused with life, the accumulation of sweat and labor spanning centuries, the lives where many memories accumulate from sadness to joy, and to leave behind the graves of loved ones who have completed their lives, to take refuge in the hope of a new life. Silivri is one of the lands where this hope blossoms. from Naslic to Serfice, Kozan and Demirsallı; From Drama and Langaza to Karacaova, Doyran and Gevgili, from Kilkis and Fere to Sarışaban, Thessaloniki and Kayalar, the exchangers started a new life in Silivri. Gazitepe, Kadıköy, Ortaköy, Selimpaşa, Yolçatı, Fener and Kurfallı, as the exchange villages of Silivri, again embraced the immigrants.”

Expressing that these lands are a region where the history of exchange penetrated and where experience takes root, Ersoy said, “Therefore, the Exchange Museum House, which was established in order to convey and explain the past to our present and our future, has been a very correct location choice. The Exchange Museum House, which has a total usage area of 3 square meters on 400 floors, was built with an architectural understanding that reflects the spirit of the period. The historical and antique objects on display, household and kitchen utensils belonging to the first three generations of exchanged families, photographs, folkloric clothes and wax sculptures will almost take our guests to the past, and will be instrumental in experiencing the state and atmosphere of those years.” made its assessment.

“The Exchange Museum House will take people on a historical journey”

Stating that the information boards about the population exchange and the library are used as a guarantee and reminder of a history that should not be forgotten, Ersoy said, “In addition, the symbolic structure of a very important historical figure such as the Gülcemal Ship is exhibited here. This enormous transatlantic cruise ship, built in Ireland with the name “Germanic”, has witnessed such events and histories ranging from the transport of immigrants to the United States to the years of population exchange, and performed such tasks that inspired novels and poems. Silivri Exchange Museum House is capable of taking people on a deep historical journey even with Gülcemal alone.” he said.

Mehmet Nuri Ersoy thanked those who contributed to the realization of the project by inviting especially children and young people to visit the museum house and to research and learn about history with the inspiration they will get from it.

Explaining that they talked about what can be done for Silivri in the meetings they held for the day, Ersoy noted that they would accelerate the library, restoration, renovation and reconstruction works.

Expressing that the municipality will prepare a tourism master plan for Silivri, Ersoy said, “We will fill it with culture and art, gastronomy and tourism elements. In this context, we plan to implement the necessary street and new building restorations and reconstructions quickly with the great support of our Ministry. I hope Silivri will reach the good days it deserves more than ever, happy days, by adding value to its value again quickly.” he said.
