Attention to Risk Factors in Knee Calcification!

Knee osteoarthritis is a problem that limits daily life activities and causes pain at the same time. Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Op.Dr.Alperen Korucu gave important information about the subject.

It is the wear and loss of the cartilaginous tissue, which covers the bone surfaces in the joints and also allows the joint to move easily. If this wear occurs in the knee joint, it is called knee calcification.

Knee arthritis is more common in people over 50 years old, that is, people over a certain age. Knee arthritis, which is a disease of middle and advanced age, is rarely seen before the age of 40.

Knee pain adversely affects the quality of life. It causes pain when walking and climbing stairs, as well as severe limitation of movement. The pain becomes severe due to the load.

Symptoms of knee osteoarthritis: Difficulty in walking, pain, limitation of movement, stiffness, swelling and burning sensation. But pain is the most obvious symptom. If the disorders in the articular cartilage progress, pain may be felt while climbing stairs, carrying loads, going uphill and even at rest.

Knee calcification can occur due to many factors. Some of these factors are; advancing age, weakened muscles around the knee, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, cartilage death, excessive activity, overweight, etc.

In the diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis, first the patient's history is listened to, and then a detailed examination by a specialist doctor is required. Additionally, x-rays and, if necessary, magnetic resonance imaging and some blood tests are performed.

Op.Dr.Alperen Korucu said, “For treatment, arthroplasty (prosthetic surgery) operations are applied to the knee joint in people over 65 years old. Prosthesis surgery is a good option for people who do not respond to drug therapy, intra-articular injection and physical therapy. Important points in applications are the patient's weight, age, general condition and whether there is a systemic disease accompanying the disease.
