Continuing its activities in the apiary established in Kayadibi with the aim of disseminating and developing beekeeping, Bornova Municipality continues to bring together citizens interested in beekeeping with experts through the organizations it organizes. The Agricultural Services Directorate, which supports producers with trainings other than seeds, seedlings and saplings, finally organized a panel titled "Ecological Agricultural Basins and Sustainable Beekeeping". In the panel, which was attended by a large number of participants, attention was drawn to the problems caused by the climate crisis on beekeeping, and solutions were discussed.

The panel titled “Ecological Agricultural Basins and Sustainable Beekeeping” was held in Bornova Municipality Cultural Center in cooperation with Bornova Municipality, Chamber of Agricultural Engineers İzmir Branch, ApiKoop (Beekeeping and Apitherapy Products Production and Marketing Cooperative) and Çarık (Environment and Bee Protection Association).

Chamber of Agricultural Engineers İzmir Branch President Hakan Çakıcı gave the opening speech, and Agricultural Engineer Anıl Ayvaz, who is in charge of Bornova Municipality Agricultural Affairs Directorate, talked about the beekeeping activities they carried out as Bornova Municipality. Şamil Tuncay Baştoy, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Ula Ali Koçman Vocational School, Department of Plant and Animal Production, Lecturer. Taylan Doğanoğlu took part as a speaker.

Saying that beekeeping has a very important place in agricultural production, Chamber of Agricultural Engineers İzmir Branch President Hakan Çakıcı said, “Unfortunately, it is getting harder to maintain agricultural activities day by day. This is due to human-made environmental problems and climate change. All this narrows our ecological environment. I think such meetings are very important in order to overcome these difficulties. In this sense, I would like to thank the Bornova Municipality for its support.”

ApiKoop President Shamil Tuncay Baştoy stated that beekeeping is going through a very difficult period and said, “The climate crisis requires us to completely review the information we have learned from beekeeping books. To give an example, we come from Muğla. On the same day last year, the air temperature in Muğla was -2 degrees, but now it is 19-20 degrees. This is not normal. However, the bee colony has two critical periods: one entering winter and the other coming out into spring. All our habits are broken. Now we have to intervene in the hive. Now we are working on it,” he said.

Üzeyir Karaca, Member of the Board of Directors of the İzmir Branch of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers, informed the participants about the beekeeping activities carried out in İzmir and the Aegean Region. Expressing that the number of harvests in the Muğla region, which was up to four, decreased to one and the production from 2021 tons in 30 to 4 tons, Karaca pointed out that as the temperatures increase, apiculture will become even more difficult.

Bornova Mayor Mustafa İduğ stated that the work and support in the agricultural field will continue to increase and said, “We are doing serious work to ensure the continuity of the activities in this area. We have an apiary in Kayadibi Neighborhood. Interested citizens can benefit from it. We provide them with both theoretical and practical training with the support of the hive. This educational panel is also a part of our work. I would like to thank everyone who contributed," he said.
