Polar Crane Delivered to Akkuyu NPP Construction

A polar crane with a lifting capacity of approximately 1 tons was delivered to the construction site of the 400st unit of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS). The polar crane, which is one of the most important mechanisms of the reactor building, is one of the first-class equipment with the highest safety class in nuclear power plants.

It took 1 day for the crane to be disembarked at the Eastern Cargo Terminal. After lowering, the two wings of the polar crane, each 42 meters long and 92 tons each, were taken to the construction site of the 1st unit of NGS. After the pre-assembly of the wings, the crane will be positioned in accordance with the design position in the reactor building of the 1st unit. The weight of the polar crane, produced at the TYAZHMASH factory in Sızran, Russia, exceeds 200 tons.

The Polar crane, or overhead crane, will be used at all stages of the nuclear power plant's operational life. After the crane is placed under the protection dome of the reactor building, it will rotate 360 degrees on a circular rail to carry out transport and technological operations related to the equipment of the reactor plant, including nuclear fuel.

Akkuyu Nuclear Inc. Sergey Butskikh, First Deputy General Manager and NGS Construction Director, made the following statement on the subject: “The arrival of a polar crane to the 1st power unit of Akkuyu NPP constitutes one of the most important logistics operations of this year. The cargo was delivered from the TYAZHMASH plant to St. Petersburg port and from there it was delivered by sea to the Eastern Cargo Terminal at the NGS site. The crane, which will be installed under the dome of the reactor building after the assembly of its parts, will undergo a series of tests for reliable and error-free transport of loads before it is put into operation.”

After laying the necessary cable lines, the installation, commissioning and testing of the polar crane will also be carried out. These transactions are planned to be completed by the end of 2022.
