Material Support for Fishermen in Istanbul Continues

IMM continued its support for fishermen this year as well. It provided material support to 12 people who own fishing boats under 1.297 meters. Delivering support packages to small-scale fishermen in the program held in Büyükada, IMM Deputy President Selçuk Sarıyar said, “We will continue to provide these supports so that more people can get fish in their homes and more children can be fed with fish.”

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) provided material support to 1.297 fishermen, known as Small-Scale Fishermen, in order to contribute to the maintenance and repair of the bread boat. At the ceremony held at the Büyükada Fisheries Cooperative, the fishermen received their parcels from the Deputy Chairman of IMM, Selçuk Sarıyar.

SARIYAR: OUR FISHERMAN FIGHT POVERTY

IMM President Ekrem İmamoğluIMM Deputy Mayor Selçuk Sarıyar conveyed the greetings of the fishermen of the island, “Our small-scale fishermen are struggling with poverty. It also has a very high potential in terms of sustainable use of resources. We will continue to provide these supports so that more people can get fish in their homes and more children can be fed with fish.”

Stating that the support will continue, Sarıyar said, “We are in talks with the fisheries cooperatives of which our small-scale fishermen are members. We are working on supports that all partners can benefit from. Together, we will identify the needs and take steps where necessary. We will continue to stand by the workers of the producers of Istanbul. We will overcome these economic conditions with a sense of solidarity.”

ATALIK: WE WILL EXPAND OUR SERVICES

In the ceremony, the city's producing, laboring; Sharing their support for farmers, breeders and fishermen, Head of Agricultural Services Department Ahmet Atalık said, “The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization declared 2022 as the year of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture. However, IMM started to support small-scale fishermen without even waiting for this year. From now on, as space problems are resolved, we will expand our services to you by diversifying our support even more.”

ERDEM GÜL: IMM RELEASE HAND TO THE FORGOTTEN AREA

Emphasizing that the support, whose motto is “small in scale, large in value”, is very similar to the Islands, Mayor of Islands Erdem Gül said, “Marine production has been left to its fate for years. In this respect, I would also like to thank IMM for its strong hand in this abandoned area. This is what suits us,” he said.

Sevinç Konkuş, President of the Women Fishermen's Association, stated that the support to fishermen is an inclusive and unifying work, and the President of IMM Ekrem İmamoğluthanked him. Ali Coşkuner, President of Büyükada Fisheries Cooperative, also stated that support packages are very valuable.

Epoxy Paste, Antifauling Paint, White Oil Paint and Fisherman's Overalls, which are used in boat maintenance, were given to the fishermen within the scope of IMM's “Boat Maintenance Material Support”. Support to a total of 2021 fishing boats in 1.200 increased to 2022 in 1.297.

Although the number of small-scale fishing vessels in Turkey constitutes 91 percent of the total number, it is of great importance to support small-scale fishermen since they only realize 10 percent of the total production.
