Pirelli became the first company in the world to produce FSC certified (Forest Stewardship Council) tires. Designed for the BMW X5 xDrive45e Rechargeable Hybrid, these tires, with FSC-certified natural rubber and rayon, represent a new horizon for increasingly sustainable tire production.
Pirelli P Zero tire with FSC certification
The FSC forest management certificate documents that while the tree-planted areas are managed in a way that preserves the biodiversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, it also ensures economic sustainability. The certification process of the complex FSC protection and custody chain confirms that FSC certified material is detected and separated from non-certified material as it moves along the supply chain from the cultivation areas to the tire manufacturer.
The Pirelli P Zero, the world's first FSC certified tire produced using FSC certified natural rubber and rayon supplied from FSC certified cultivation areas, will be the original equipment of the BMW X5 xDrive45e Rechargeable Hybrid *. The FSC certified Pirelli P Zero will be available in size 275/35 R22 for the front and 315/30 R22 for the rear. The second-generation electric version of the BMW X5 is combined with the model-specific 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and the fourth generation of BMW eDrive technology. The rechargeable hybrid system produces 290 kW / 394 hp and a maximum torque of 600 Nm and offers an electric range of 77-88 km (WLTP). The BMW Group conducted a CO5 certification process for the BMW X45 xDrive2e, covering the entire cycle from raw material purchase to supply chain and production, from usage to recycling.
Developed by Pirelli according to the 'perfect fit' strategy, the P Zero tire meets the performance requirements of the German automotive manufacturer for this popular model, while also contributing to the 'green' philosophy of this hybrid vehicle. Manufactured exclusively at Pirelli's Rome factory in the state of Georgia in the USA, this new tire is specifically designed to target environmental sustainability. In addition, low rolling resistance (with an 'A' score on the European tire label) was targeted, which improves fuel consumption and therefore reduces harmful emissions. In addition to these, the lower noise level also benefits the environment.
Sustainable natural rubber chain
The FSC certification of the natural rubber used in the production of the new P Zero tire developed for BMW's X5 Rechargeable Hybrid vehicle and sourced from certified plantations represents a new step forward in the sustainable management of the natural rubber supply chain for Pirelli for many years. In this context, in line with the principles and values in the Pirelli Sustainable Natural Rubber Policy published in 2017, a road map is followed that defines activities based on the training and sharing of best practices in the countries where the material is supplied. This document; It is the result of discussions with the most important stakeholders in the natural rubber value chain, including international NGOs, Pirelli's main natural rubber suppliers, manufacturers, growers and dealers in the supply chain, automotive customers and multilateral global institutions. Pirelli is also a founding member of GPSNR, a global platform for sustainable natural rubber. Founded in 2018, this multi-stakeholder platform aims to support the sustainable development of the natural rubber business around the world and thus benefit the entire supply chain.
Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli's Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Future Mobility, said: “Sustainable mobility begins at the raw material stage before it reaches the road. With the world's first FSC certified tire, Pirelli once again demonstrates its commitment to achieving increasingly demanding goals in terms of sustainability. Our innovative material works and our production processes realized with increasingly advanced technologies also support sustainability. We continue to invest in sustainable growth for our planet with the awareness that it is necessary for the future of our business. ”
“As a premium automotive manufacturer, we aim to lead and take responsibility towards sustainability,” said Andreas Wendt, board member responsible for the Purchasing and Supplier Network of BMW AG. . Using tires made of certified natural rubber is a pioneering success in our industry. In this way, we help protect biodiversity and forests to combat climate change, ”he said.
“Pirelli's new FSC certified tire represents an important milestone on the road to achieving economic, social and environmental benefit along the natural rubber value chain,” said Jeremy Harrison, Global Markets Director of FSC International. This is particularly important in the context of natural rubber's sustainability challenges. Congratulations to Pirelli for its commitment to using responsibly sourced raw materials and demonstrating that a transparent natural rubber value chain from small growers to the market is possible. Congratulations to BMW for supporting the development of the FSC certified tire and choosing one of its new models as equipment. This important step towards a more sustainable natural rubber value chain also helps to reduce forest losses and support the fight against climate change. We congratulate both companies for their leadership in the field of sustainability and hope that this development will drive a broader transformation in the industry. ” said.
