Lithuanian railway company LTG Link has unveiled the first of 15 new generation trains it will procure from Swiss manufacturer Stadler as part of a modernisation drive aimed at significantly improving the travel experience in the country and promoting sustainable transport. LTG Link and Stadler signed an agreement worth a total of 226.5 million euros (approximately $240 million) in 2023. The agreement includes the delivery of nine electric trains and six dual-mode (battery) trains, as well as the supply of spare parts until 2037.
Testing Started and Strengthening in the Baltic Market
The first Stadler train has arrived in the capital Vilnius, where preparations for static tests have begun. The trains are expected to enter passenger service in 2026 following the completion of the certification tests to be carried out under the supervision of Lithuanian authorities. This major procurement is also strategically important for Stadler to strengthen its presence in the Baltic market.
Stadler FLIRT: Comfort and High Capacity
The new generation of Stadler FLIRT trains is designed with a focus on passenger comfort, efficiency and sustainability:
- Service Speed: Up to 160 km/h on the main route Vilnius-Šiauliai-Klaipėda.
- Dual Mode Trains: They will increase operational efficiency by providing flexibility on partially electrified lines such as Kaunas-Šiauliai and Vilnius.
- Internal Features:
- All trains have a special bistro area.
- up to 30 bicycle parking spaces are reserved, which can be used as additional seating during the winter months.
- Engineers have improved sound insulation and carpeted the interiors to increase comfort.
Sustainability Goals
The introduction of these trains in Lithuania will play a critical role in the country’s energy independence and environmental goals:
- The new trains will help reduce Lithuania’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.
- (i.e. 731 km) of Lithuania’s railway infrastructure will be electrified by 2026.
Experts consider this modernisation process of LTG Link to be in line with the European Union’s (EU) plan for decarbonisation of transport. With the purchase of the latest generation of rolling stock, Lithuania has become an important leader in the field of sustainable transport.
