Rail Renewal Work for Line Safety in Izmir Metro

An intensive maintenance work is being carried out on the metro line, which constitutes one of the main arteries of urban transport in Izmir, at night until the morning. The maintenance teams, who started working after the last service, replaced approximately 400 metres of rails to ensure line safety. By the end of this year, another 700 metres of track will be replaced.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality continues to work for comfortable, safe and sustainable transport. carrying passengers on 24 stations and 27 kilometres of line, Izmir Metro AŞ, the lifeblood of urban transport, carries out maintenance and replacement of the rails during the night hours when the services end. Works such as switch replacement and grinding are completed until the first light of the morning and the line is made ready for service.

A total of 400 metres of rails were replaced on the line. Around 700 metres of track replacement is targeted until the end of the year. In addition, all Fahrettin Altay switch sets will also be replaced. The works are expected to continue in 2026.

Arda Ege Taşkıran, Line and Structures Supervisor of Izmir Metro AŞ, who is responsible for line maintenance, stated that they work in double shifts and said, “Since our trains are in service during the day, we cannot carry out heavy maintenance work because our line is energised. After the power is cut, we have time to work on the line until 04.30 at night. During this period, a line team of 10-15 people works at night. Our night heavy maintenance works, planned maintenance works, revisions, track changes, switch changes, arrangement, welding, grinding works continue.”

“2025 was a busy year for us”

Stating that rail maintenance and changes will continue, Taşkıran said, “2025 was an active year for us. We had around 400 metres of rail replacement on our line. We have changed switches, our switch hubs and switch tongues were replaced with spares. We had machine grinding works in most sections of our line. We carry out our revisions and maintenance in line with our maintenance plan every night. we have a planned rail maintenance work in the last quarter of 2025, our rails have arrived. We plan to carry out a work before the end of this year, around 700 metres of rails will be changed. Subsequently, we plan to change 4 switches in Fahrettin Altay region.”
