India-based rail system manufacturer Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) has signed a giant agreement worth $282 million with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The agreement covers the design, manufacture, supply and commissioning of 132 driverless metro wagons for the Mumbai Metro Line-5 project.
TRSL will provide the technical systems of the line as well as the rail vehicles. the 24.9 km railway line will include signalling systems, telecommunications equipment for 16 stations and platform screen doors to improve passenger safety. The company will also provide comprehensive maintenance services over a five-year period to improve functionality and operational efficiency.
Continuing Domestic Production and Major Projects
The metro wagons for the new Line 5 will be manufactured at TRSL’s Passenger Rail Systems plant at Uttarpara, near Kolkata. This facility is a one-stop production centre where all activities from the assembly of wagon bodies to the testing of the train sets are carried out.
Titagarh Rail Systems is not the only major supplier for the metro system in Mumbai. The company had earlier secured another $284 million contract from MMRDA to manufacture and supply 18 six-car driverless trains for Mumbai Metro Line-6 in March 2025. With this new deal, TRSL has become one of the key players in the expansion of Mumbai’s metro system and continues to engage in major projects in the city. These deals also showcase India’s capacity and expertise in local railway manufacturing.
