Denmark will not buy air defence systems from Israel

The Danish Ministry of Defence has officially announced that it has abandoned the procurement of the Barak MX air defence systemmanufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). According to Breaking Defence, the ministry said the decision was prompted by Defence Command’s recommendation that resources “prioritise other initiatives to provide more immediate combat power”.

Military-Technical Evaluation Redirected Resources

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said in a statement that the Defence Command had presented a “clear military-technical assessment” of the development of land-based air defence systems. “We have agreed to follow the recommendations of the Defence Command in order to acquire the most appropriate capabilities and ensure a rapid, effective development, ” Poulsen said.

The report prepared by the Defence Command emphasised that the resources to be allocated to the potential procurement of the Barak MX system should be shifted to projects that would “more quickly provide combat power” to the country. This assessment revealed that the preparation of a land-based air defence system “as soon as possible” is critical for national security.

Despite this decision, it is not yet clear which air defence system Denmark will prefer as an alternative to the Barak MX.

Increasing Drone Threat Increases Urgency

Denmark’s need to rapidly build up its land-based air defence capabilities has become even more urgent, especially in the face of increased drone sightings over the country’s airports and intensified Russian drone activity across Europe.

The need for a short-range and anti-drone system has been epitomised by a recent serious incident. In September, air traffic was halted after a drone was detected at Copenhagen Airport. After this incident, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen made a striking statement as “I cannot rule out that Russia may have had a hand in this incident”.

These developments strategically support Denmark’s decision to redirect its defence resources towards systems that can be deployed more rapidly and can respond to current threats immediately.

Features of Barak MX

The Barak MX system, developed by IAI, was capable of being equipped with different missiles with a range of up to 150 kilometres. The system was designed to combat a wide range of air threats such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), fighter jets, helicopters, cruise missiles, air defence missiles and tactical ballistic missiles.
