The Report Has Been Published… Who Has the Real Responsibility for the Climate Crisis?

Climate News and KONDA Research conducted the survey this year, which it has been repeating since 2018, to measure the Turkish public's perception of climate change and to learn their opinions about the climate crisis, which is increasing its severity every year.

According to the study conducted and published on the eve of local elections, 55 percent of the society thinks that the government/president bears the most responsibility for combating the climate crisis.

This rate is followed by local governments/municipalities with 22 percent. This is followed by non-governmental organizations with 13 percent, private sector/industry with 7 percent and political parties with 4 percent, respectively. When the answers to this question were examined according to gender, age and education level, it was observed that the responsibility was given to the Government/President at the highest rate in each cluster.

Just before the local elections, the respondents were also asked about the climate action performance of local governments in the region they live in, and the results were compared with another study conducted by KONDA last year.

Accordingly, there has been an increase in the proportion of those who think that municipalities are making efforts towards this issue since 2022. While those who agreed with this proposition in November 2022 corresponded to 18 percent of the sample, in November 2023 this rate increased by 7 points and corresponded to 25 percent. However, there was an 8-point increase in the proportion of those who said this proposition was "absolutely wrong", that is, those who thought that municipalities did not make efforts towards climate change.

According to the prominent results of the survey;

– 55 percent of the society thinks that the Government/President has the most responsibility for combating the climate crisis, and 22 percent thinks that local governments are responsible.
– 75 percent of those surveyed state that local governments do not make enough efforts for climate change.
– 36 percent of the society sees renewable energy investments and the other 36 percent sees infrastructure work against floods and rain as the two most important areas of work that municipalities should do in the fight against the climate crisis.
– 88 percent of those interviewed find last year's record summer temperatures linked to climate change.
– While three out of four people say that climate change is linked to human activities, they also express concern about climate change.
