International Dry Agriculture Symposium Begins

Eskişehir is hosting an important international symposium in agriculture. In cooperation with Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality and Agri-Food Ethics Association (TARGET), “Dry Agriculture, Again!” The International Symposium, titled, will be held in Eskişehir on 19-20 October. Scientists, researchers and practitioners from our country and abroad will participate in the symposium.

Today, when drought and climate crisis have become one of the biggest problems threatening our future, Eskişehir is hosting an important organization in order to emphasize the need to reclaim dry agriculture, the value and importance of which is increasing day by day. “Dry Agriculture, Again!” The International Symposium titled brings together scientists, researchers, practitioners and agricultural stakeholders from our country and abroad.

The opening speeches of the symposium, which will start at 19:09.00 on Wednesday, 1929 October at the Metropolitan Municipality Art and Culture Palace (Opera), were delivered by the Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Büyükerşen, President of the Association of Agriculture and Food Ethics Prof. Dr. Businessperson İnan Kıraç, son of Ali Numan Kıraç, whose surname was given to him by Atatürk and the first director of the Dry Farming Research Station, which was established in Eskişehir in XNUMX by the order of Cemal Taluğ and Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, will be appointed.

After the opening speeches, the opening conference of the symposium, which will continue throughout the day, was made by Prof. Dr. Bart Gremmen will do it.

Dr. Fethiye Özberk will make their presentations with the title of “Farmer Practices in Wheat and Barley Agriculture in Semi-Arid Areas in Şanlıurfa”.

The speakers and presentation titles of the third session are; TİGEM Head of Crop Production Department (R) Fahri Harmanşah “Contribution of State Production Farms (DÜÇ) to Turkey's Success in Dry Agriculture”, Aksaray University Faculty Member Prof.Dr. Alptekin Karagöz "Agricultural Ethics and Farmers' Rights in the Protection of Local Varieties (Landraces) in Dry Agricultural Areas" and Istanbul University Faculty of Forestry Lecturer Prof. Dr. Doğanay Tolunay will be on “Ecology of Semi-Arid Areas”. The first day will be completed at 17.45.

On Thursday, October 20, the second day of the symposium, under the chairmanship of TARGET Vice President Petek Ataman, in the first session of the second day and the fourth session of the symposium, Dünya Newspaper Agriculture Writer Ali Ekber Yıldırım will make a presentation titled “Climate Crisis, Water Problem and Dry Agriculture”. In the fifth session; From the Moroccan Office of the International Center for Agricultural Research in Arid Areas (ICARDA), Dr. Mina Devkota Wasti, “ICARDA's Agronomy Studies in Dry Farming” and the Global Wheat Program Director of the International Corn and Wheat Development Center (CIMMYT- Mexico) Dr. Hans-Joachim Braun will make presentations on “Wheat Breeding in Semi-Arid Fields and Looking to the Future”.

Harran University Faculty of Agriculture Lecturer Prof. Dr. In the sixth session chaired by İrfan Özberk; UN FAO Turkey Project for Conservation and Sustainable Management of Steppe Ecosystems National Project Coordinator Nihan Yenilmez Arpa, "Anatolia's Steppes and Life in the Steppe" and Ankara University Faculty of Agriculture Lecturer Prof. Dr. Yusuf Ersoy Yıldırım will make their presentations with the title of “Conservation of Soil Water in Rainfall Agriculture”. In the seventh and last session of the symposium; Istanbul University Faculty of Letters (E) lecturer, famous archaeologist Prof.Dr. Mehmet Özdoğan “The Beginning of Agriculture in Anatolia and the Reflections of the Process of Diversification and Expansion on the Social Order” and Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences Lecturer Prof.Dr. Erdem Denk will share their presentations with the audience under the title of “We Reap What We Sow: Agriculture as a Tool for(inequality)”.

The symposium will conclude with a plaque ceremony at 17.30 after the screening of the documentary "Steps of Civilization".
