One of the experts at DoktorTakvimi.com, Prof. Dr. Atilla İlhan talked about the wonders of MS Disease. MS, an immune system disorder; It occurs when the leukocyte-white blood cell, which takes on the body's defense in an unknown way, accepts the sheath called myelin, which surrounds the outside of the nerve cells, as foreign and wages war against it. Normally, it should fight foreigners coming from outside, but the body's war against its own structure weakens the immune system in people. It is seen in 100 out of every 50 thousand people in our country and mostly in young women between the ages of 20-40.

Listing the symptoms of the disease as loss of sensation, weakness, double vision, imbalance, slurring in speech, rarely urinary incontinence, epilepsy and facial pain called Trigeminal Neuralgia, Prof. Dr. Atilla İlhan continued his words by saying:

“The emergence of these complaints in the person is called an attack. The most important point here is that the complaints continue for more than 24 hours. This criterion is of great importance, especially in patients newly diagnosed with MS, since all kinds of complaints are thought to be attacks. Complaints such as numbness in the arm that last 15 minutes and pass are not counted as an attack.”

Stating that MS disease is affected by many different reasons, it does not occur due to a definite reason, Prof. Dr. Atilla İlhan said, “Although many factors such as environmental factors, genetic causes, some viruses, hormones, and some toxic substances are mentioned in the formation of the disease, these are not seen in all patients. In the diagnosis of the disease, the patient's history, neurological examination and laboratory tests are evaluated together. However, it is not sufficient for diagnosis alone. For example; Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP) test can be performed to evaluate the optic nerve, and waist water examination (CSF test) can be performed to evaluate nervous system damage.

The most common type of MS, which is characterized by exacerbations and exacerbations, rarely has a sudden onset and severe course, and sometimes it can progress continuously. Stating that the definitive treatment of MS is not yet possible, Prof. Dr. İlhan said:

“But that doesn't mean our hands are tied. Treatment in MS is done in two ways as relapse treatment and preventive treatment. High-dose cortisone is used in the treatment of attacks. In the preventive treatment, there are drugs in the form of injections and oral drugs that have been released in recent years. Preventive drug treatment also differs depending on the patient's condition and whether there are other concomitant diseases.

He warns patients, stating that many products are sold, especially on the internet, which says that they treat MS. prof. Dr. İlhan said, “These are all products sold for financial gain. Some, beyond the benefit, may even have serious drawbacks. Therefore, never use such products without consulting your doctor.

Since MS is a disease of the immune system, anything that will distress this system is inconvenient for the MS patient. Conditions such as extreme stress, fatigue, heavy diet, and long-term insomnia increase the risk of attacks. In addition, thermal baths and saunas are not suitable because hot MS patients can cause severe fatigue. The risk of attack may also increase in febrile diseases, traumas, and surgical interventions.
