As a member of the Avax – Ghella – Alstom consortium, Alstom, the world leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has completed the infrastructure work for all six stations of the Haidari-Pire extension of Line 3 of the Athens metro network. The first three stations have already been delivered for commercial service in July 2020.

Alstom's scope included the design, supply and installation of traction power, including third rail, medium voltage supply and low voltage distribution. Within the scope of the project, software updates were made to 2 existing technical rooms operating on the 3nd and 76rd Lines.

Among its responsibilities, Alstom has established the longstanding Iconis urban mobility solution for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), which provides a high-performance scalable solution for power supply and allows for optimized energy control.

“ Alstom continues to offer modern mobility solutions for Greece as we have done for the last 40 years . “This Metro Line 3 extension is important as it offers passengers and tourists a smooth and faster transport service from Athens international airport to Piraeus Port.”

Between the opening of three new stations, Alstom is expanding its Automatic Train Control (ATS) system, also based on the Iconis platform, to cover the 2 and 3 line networks of the Attiko Metro. Thanks to ATS, traffic is safer and more efficient as the system provides online timetable management, automatic route determination and train identification, allowing traffic control managers to automatically know the status of any train in traffic at any point and avoid potential risks.

Now fully operational, Line 3 will connect Piraeus Port to central Athens and other major transport hubs such as the Airport and Central Train Station. Piraeus Port will be connected to Eleftherios Venizelos International in just 55 minutes. The line will serve more than 130.000 passengers per day, transforming Piraeus Station into the largest transport hub in the Attica region.

In its 30-year history, Iconis has optimized urban transport performance in more than 20 countries, including France, Switzerland, Italy, Canada and India. Iconis is a control center solution consisting of modules addressing different products such as ATS, SCADA or Integrated Control and Security Center (ICS or ICSC).

Operating in Greece for over 40 years, Alstom has successfully participated in some of the largest transport infrastructure construction projects in the country, including the extension of Athens Metro Lines 2 and 3, Athens Suburban Rail and Metro Line 3 to Piraeus. In addition, Alstom is the provider of the latest 25 generation Citadis X05 tram for Athens. In June 2021, Alstom signed a contract for Athens Metro Line 4, one of Europe's largest turnkey projects.
