A road map is being prepared for the Nilüfer Stream, which originates from the Uludağ springs and follows the 103-kilometer line and reaches the Marmara Sea, to regain its former clean appearance and to use it more efficiently. All parties of the issue, from city administration to ministry representatives, from business people to non-governmental organizations, came together at the 'Nilüfer Stream Action Plan' meeting.

Bursa's common sense came into play in order for the Nilüfer Stream, which took its source from Uludağ and crossed the Bursa Plain from beginning to end and poured into the Marmara Sea, to regain its clean water 'as it used to be'. After the narrow meeting held with the participation of the Metropolitan Municipality and Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BTSO) under the coordination of Bursa Governorship; A comprehensive meeting was held with the participation of the mayors and administrators of the district through which the Nilüfer Stream passes, representatives of organized industrial zones, non-governmental organizations and ministry representatives. At the meeting, Nilüfer Stream was discussed with all its aspects.

“I believe it will be a vision project”

Bursa Governor Yakup Canbolat, who spoke at the meeting at Atatürk Congress and Culture Center, said that there is environmental pollution in Nilüfer Stream due to industry and other wastes. Governor Canbolat stated that two ideas emerged for the rescue of the Nilüfer Stream and that they should be filled in technically. The second project is to protect the Nilüfer Stream with the dam system and to keep water there for 12 months and to bring it to the basin where various sports and cultural activities can be held. Significant research has been done on this. We organized this meeting to discuss the Nilüfer Stream with wider participation. This project can only be done by discussing the conditions in Bursa. I believe it will be a showcase and vision project for Bursa. Meeting; It will make important contributions to bring the Nilüfer Stream to tourism, culture and the city. After the joint decision, feasibility and project design studies will be started. We would like to support all parties related to Nilüfer Stream," he said.

“We have a historical responsibility”

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş stated that the city has been talking about the pollution of the Nilüfer Stream for the last 25-30 years. Explaining that a feasibility study has been carried out regarding the arrangement and correction of the river, which follows a wide line from the east to the west side of the city, dividing the city center, Mayor Aktaş said that business people are also sensitive about environmental pollution, which is constantly talked about. Underlining the need to act by putting the facts on the table at this point, Mayor Aktaş said, “In the end, Bursa will decide this. As the Metropolitan Municipality and BUSKİ, perhaps one of the biggest investments we have made is treatment facilities. We have a total investment of 500 million Euros in this regard. In the case of Nilüfer Stream, we should come up with a formula with the support of the Ministry and business people. Of course we are talking about big numbers. But we have a historical responsibility in this regard. In the meeting with wide participation, we wanted representatives from the municipalities on the route, organized industrial zones and officials from independent organizations. I hope there will be good results," he said.

“We find the project very valuable”

BTSO Chairman of the Board İbrahim Burkay, who took the floor after the presentation made by the company that carried out the feasibility study on the Nilüfer Stream, said that the Nilüfer Stream is an important issue for Bursa. Stating that there are also issues that should not be overlooked, Burkay said that all of the organized industrial zones have their own treatment facilities. Stating that they have also started a new formation that brings together 17 industrial zones in Bursa, Burkay said, “The first agenda item of the meeting we held with this formation is the recycling of treated industrial wastes. A serious cost has been revealed regarding the Nilüfer Stream. Then, we should add to this study the unplanned industrial areas that cover 47 percent of Bursa's industry. Domestic waste should also be included in the project. We collect waste from 3 industrial areas in the east of the city. We do this purification in a single center. When we started the project, especially the agricultural sector was complaining about 'dirty water flowing from the existing canals'. After laying our discharge and collector lines, we collected all the waste coming from the industry with the collector lines and delivered the treated water to the green environment. But we saw that all channels stopped. In other words, the event that we call the river, polluting the river, was the discharge consisting entirely of industrial wastes. For about 3-4 years, we have also seen that those who farm in the region draw water from certain points of our collector lines. Let's save the Nilüfer Creek, but let's also calculate that when you discharge it together with these collector lines, the Nilüfer Creek will dry up. It also needs to be fed. Of course, we find the project very valuable and we care about it”.
