“Canal Istanbul is a strategic move in terms of changing world dynamics”

Pointing out that maritime transport is much more economical than other sectors and that 90 percent of world trade is on the seas, Minister Karaismailoğlu emphasized the importance of maritime in economic growth and trade. Reminding that the Turkish-owned maritime merchant fleet was in the 2003th rank in the world with 8,9 million dead tons in 17, Minister Karaismailoğlu stated that they increased this figure to the 2021th rank with 28,9 million dead tons in 15.

Karaismailoğlu stated that the foundation of the first bridge to be built on the Sazlıdere Dam, which will be on the route of Kanal Istanbul, will be laid tomorrow with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and continued his speech as follows:

“Canal Istanbul is a strategic move that emerged in line with the technological and economic developments in the world and in our country, changing economic trends and the increasing needs of our country in terms of transportation infrastructures. We all know that navigational difficulties arise for ships due to sharp turns in the Bosphorus, counter currents, and urban maritime traffic created by the urban ferries and ferries that carry 54 thousand passengers a day at 500 piers. With Kanal Istanbul, it is among our top priorities that we will make a major improvement in the protection of the life and property of the Bosphorus, the people around it, and our sailors and fisherman brothers.”
