TCG SAVARONA to Operate with STM’s National Navigation System

STM, Turkey’s national engineering power in the defence industry, is making technological contributions to the modernisation process of the Savarona Yacht, the legacy of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, with critical indigenous subsystems developed by STM in addition to warships. STMDENGİZ WECDIS, the Electronic Map Display, Information and Tracking System developed by STM with indigenous capabilities, has been integrated into the TCG SAVARONA, which was transferred to the Turkish Naval Forces Command under state status and modernised by the Istanbul Shipyard Command under the contractorship of ASFAT. Savarona will find its course with STM’s national navigation system.

Smiley Face Contributing to Savarona is a Historical Responsibility and an Occasion of Pride

Özgür Güleryüz, General Manager of STM, said: “As STM, we have so far integrated the indigenous systems we have developed into the modern warships of our navy, and now we are happy to bring this technological know-how together with one of the symbols of our history. These studies are an indicator of our determination to continuously improve the services we offer to the ecosystem. One of the latest and most meaningful examples of this is the TCG SAVARONA project. Contributing to Savarona, the legacy of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of our Republic, is not only an engineering project for us, but also an occasion of historical responsibility and pride. With the WECDIS system, we are honoured to support Savarona’s navigation in accordance with the requirements of the era.”

Safe and Controlled Navigation with STMDENGİZ WECDIS

STMDENGİZ WECDIS, the Electronic Map Display, Information and Tracking System developed by STM engineers for military naval platforms, is the first WECDIS product from Turkey to receive the “Wheelmark” approval of the Maritime Equipment Directive (MED-Marine Equipment Directive) certificate, which is valid worldwide.

STMDENGİZ WECDIS, which is produced for underwater and surface platforms used for military purposes, has been designed to meet all military functional requirements as well as including new generation military mapping systems. The system, which can be found on ships, on the bridge or in the Combat Operations Centre depending on the size of the platform, automatically displays the ship’s route and progress in the digital environment and functions as a map. It also increases the safety of travelling with the additional layers installed.

Compatible with S-100 Based Maps

While the indigenous software STMDENGİZ WECDIS increases navigational awareness by integrating other data providers, it also increases the efficiency of the navigation plan by reducing the time to be used in the preparation and evaluation of the navigation plan. The system, which also positively affects the efficiency of chart corrections by reducing the burden on navigational personnel, eliminates the need for manual chart corrections and long navigation plans by automatically making chart corrections by electronic chart producing organisations and uploading them to the system. STMDENGİZ WECDIS, which has easy-to-use screen functions and high operating performance, as well as user-friendly software and various screen sizes, includes route planning/editing and safety control functions. In parallel with today’s technological developments, STM continues to work on making the system suitable for the display of S-100-based maps, and plans to offer this feature to users in the systems it will produce in the near future.

Attached to the National Ships, Raced to Export

STMDENGİZ WECDIS incorporates different Additional Military Layers (AML). For example, when mines or wrecks are detected during a previous mine operation in a region, and these detections are uploaded to the system as an additional military layer, this information can be seen in the system thanks to the additional layers of STMDENGİZ WECDIS. In this way, military ships are provided with a safer and more controlled navigation opportunity.

In 2020, the Electronic Map Display and Information System “STMDENGİZ ECDIS”, the civilian/commercial version of the product, became the first ECDIS to receive MED Certification in Turkey. STMDENGİZ ECDIS is being integrated into the AGOSTA 90B Pakistan Submarine Modernisation Project, of which STM is the prime contractor, while STMDENGİZ WECDIS is being integrated into all ships of the “Istif” Class, Turkey’s national frigate project, as well as into the National Fast Patrol Boat Project, the New Type Mine Hunting Ship (Y-MAG) Project and the warships exported by STM.
